    I use a single match and several small slivers of arborvitae (aka redneck cedar) and always get the fire started that way........

    sometimes i use plain newspaper or fatwood but a torch is nice to get the draft goin on those warmer days with a cold chimney.

    How about using Doritos for fire starters?

    That stuff is crazy when lit on fire.

    Granted, it's not cost conscientious, and a waste of a great snack chip.

    I tried a handful of them last weekend on the fire pit. They were the small crushed chips leftover in the bottom of the bag. Didn't react at all once it hit the coals.....

    I know this is old but what didnt work out so well? I found that using crayons was not optimal. Its best as a coloring (say for a candle) but as I looked at the bottom, crayons that haven't melted even under boil sat on the bottom. Its best if just straight wax gets melted. Something in some crayons must have it at a higher melting point? Anyways I made some with dixie cups. But not sure why you took off the wrapper though.
