I can hardly believe all the coon we have around here. It would probably blow some minds knowing how many have been taken care of this year around this area but, starting a couple days ago, they are now into our raspberries. And the corn is not far from the berries so we know what this is going to turn into. Then today we had to go away and not far from the house, what was to run across the road? Of course, another coon. It surely would be nice if the pelts were worth something and we could get people out hunting them again. But, I don't know of any coon hunters anymore. We used to have many of them around here but none now. Sad... Oh well, time to go set some traps before the sun sets.
We have a few coon hunters left down here. Ive never spent much time hunting them myself but they sure are aggravating with food plots and gardens.
I think it's hard to find coon hunters because they ran out of places where folks would let them hunt. 20 or so years ago my parents used to let a guy and his son hunt, but I don't think they've heard from him in a long time. It was pretty cool stepping outside at night and listening to those hounds!
There is a huge amount of documentation about the overpopulation of Racoons. Seems they are thriving on people food,
Perhaps one reason marshmallows make good bait along with many other things. The biggest problem is they don't just have one offspring...
