Anybody unclefess have a couple? animal pelts suitable for construction of a pair of moccasins that I could buy? I know nothing about what would be needed and am looking for a bit of guidance also. Long story short, I have a student working with me this summer who is interested in doing this and having trouble finding material.

This time of year it's going to be tough finding anything. Late fall and winter is when the pelts are prime. I wouldn't think you'd get very good results from a pelt right now.

I know we've got a bunch of unsold coon that are still sitting on the auction floor up in Canada, but that ain't going to help you.

Are you wanting leather, or a hide with fur? Check ebay, I just did a search using "tanned hide" and got a lot of hits varying from deer to coyote to fox to skunk.

I bet deer or moose hide would fit the bill. Do you have a place where they buy/sell fur near you? A wildlife federation that could put you in contact with hunters, or get word out you need a piece of hide?

Check your local game regs first! Here in hoosier country, its illegal to sell wild game products of any kind. Buying, I'm not sure about.

hi dave, you dont want a pelt as that would have fur still on it ,for moccasins you want tanned hides ,here are a couple i could think of

I don't really know what he wants or needs for the moccasins.

He told me there is a female student in the program who has a pair of slippers/moccasins with fur on the inside that she made for herself. He wants her to show him how to make a pair for himself. I'm pretty sure the moccasins would just be a bonus.:)

I smell what you're cooking. Should be able to pick up some buckskin on ebay or etsy for their date...errr....lessons on making footwear.

Exactly, kind of twisted I know but, some of the kids who get into this program are exceptionally nerdy either that or he's got a thing for feet and he's trying to pick the right lady from the start

Dave, I've made some in the past and they can turn out really great. Been thinking about possibly making more next winter. I had a book but sent it to another member. I'll contact him and if nothing else, perhaps he could scan some pages of that book and send to you. I'll PM him about it.

I could be way off the mark here, but I have several pairs of slippers with fur on the inside, though it's really nice and lifelike, its all synthetic. Maybe a sheepskin pelt, or faux fur lined leather from the fabric store?
