Having issues with the u joint by the rear axle... since the clutch swap I heard some weird knocking... it's the u-joint. The cups are not being pinched by the straps/clamps and the whole u joint is sliding side to side on the drive shaft yoke. Is there some kind of shim available to tighten it up or did someone use the wrong strap/clamp for a previous replacement? 2001 dodge 2500 with 24V HO cummins and nv5600 6 speed.

    Thanks guys

No, no shims. Sounds like someone used the wrong joint for the truck

Compared to the right ones.... the joints are right, straps appear to be the problem...

Are there tabs sticking up in the yoke openings to stop the joint from sliding? Broke off?

Yup, the tabs on the yoke are the only thing keeping the joints from coming apart....

I remember breaking one of the universal straps on my 2000 Cummins. Seems there were several options depending on what rear end it was built with. Dana 70 or 80 I think.

Do you know the universal number you installed?

Are the caps held in securely but the joint moves? If so I'd say your missing all your needle bearings. If I were you'd I'd take the truck to the nearest chevy dealership and trade it in Asap!

No, the caps are moving, if I trade it's going to be an engine swap to a ford...

If it's an 80 it might be a 1410 maybe a 1350. Those are spicer numbers and I recommend Spicer joints. I do a lot of rock crawling and we blow up a lot of u joints and I'll only use Spicer stuff.

And why would anybody engineering swap a Cummins to a Ford Motor? I'm not a Dodge fan at all but going from a Cummins to a Powerstroke (unless a 7.3) is like going from a Stihl to a Poulan.

Dead Fords are easy to find. They're the best selling trucks because they need replaced the most! I'll wear my Bowtie till I die!
