Back in my 20s I wore the bite suit for a local trainer. As much as I don't want an attack dog either, those dogs were great pets and only got mean on command. English was not used so a threat couldn't call the dog off of himself. Trained is an understatement. We would put hot dogs on the floor and the dogs would sit there staring at them for an 8 hour day and not move. If only I had more yard and house....I'd be back into it again.
I Was At Ft Stewart and we had the soliders put on a demo with the working dogs. They asked if anyone would put the suit on. I agreed. And they played a scenario out like they made contact with me asked for ID and I refused and ran away. When I didn't stop they sent the dog out. At that time it was the largest dog the army had. I was thinking 115# German shepard. Running full bore and jumped onto my back (they told me to go down when he hit me even if I didn't fall it would be easier. I think dog jumped 8 ft in the air. I'm 6'2" and about 200. Umm I was going down, no standing througH that!!!. He grabbed my arm and was holding me until MP got to him to call off and pull off. He still got enough of my arm through that suit that he turned the inside of my bicep black from a bruise from the bite. These were seriously mean working dogs. Unless told you didn't pet these. Some of the male dogs were so alpha they could not even have a female handler, they could smell they were female and they would dominate and not listen to them. But these were the dogs on patrol in Iraq and Afghanistan so you don't want aNY pet dog. Seriously these made any cop dog I have met seem like a family lap dog pet. It was a cool experience that was about 8 years ago. Not many civilians got the chance to train with those dogs .
I'm not sure, but just in case, did you have your doors locked, door to the house or the truck? Had they taken anything, would not "forceful entry" be a consideration? My dogs, well I just don't know what they really would do. But I know they back at any "unusual" noise. I hate to admit to it, but one of those little yippers are the best for that. That will set off the rest of them. And yes, I allow my dogs to bark when they hear a noise, or when someone comes into the house or yard. I'm all for a home monitoring system. Getting the intruder caught on a recording does wonders to help with the catching and conviction. I have been looking at different systems for months. I want a wireless system that does not interfere with my wifi.
My last lab was 100 lbs and might play with somebody to death if they broke into the house. Currently have a 40 lb lab that growls and barks at my dad when he comes over. Don't beat yourself up too bad. Just learn something from it and be glad you didn't have to shoot the guy...that probably is less fun than a nap on the couch.
I doubt many folks want an attack dog. But I want one who will protect but still obeys when you tell them it is okay. That is the difference.
Good to hear your safe, stuff can be replaced but people can't! Take a look at Simplisafe SimpliSafe: Home Security Systems It's a good easy to use easy to set up alarm company that can be used as either monitored or not-monitored ie the alarm goes off but police/fire is not dispatched! Not as cheap as harbor freight motion sensor but much more flexable. Can even add on smoke, co2, and water freeze sensor.
If the intruder speaks German, or understand the schutzhund commands, then they can literally call the dogs off. Most dogs are territorial, their home is their den, so to speak.
Very happy with my simply safe system, been using it for 3+years. I figure with it and the 3 boxers I shouldn't get surprised in the night.
Guard dogs............ Otis 125 Rotti, never barked no matter what. He would sit inside the door and watch you walk up, never blink. He might even smile at you. If you entered uninvited, guaranteed you do not leave. RIP Otis
We had a rot that would let people in, then corner them and sit down in front of them. No biting, no barking.
That is the German way though. They over engineer so much, then fail to think of the obvious issues. That's precisely what did the Bismarck battleship in. They armored the heck out of it on the sides , but failed to protect the rudder with more modern design. Well, that OOC rudder led to its demise by US made torpedo planes piloted by British forces.
Not here in NH, we have a right to protect and defend the castle. Actually had a cop tell me, try not to shoot em in the back, if they run out the door drag the body back in. Where I'm at crime isn't much of an issue, Better than a dog, I got a well armed pizzed of Irish wife. Dude you picked the wrong house. Live Free or Die.
