Sometimes, change is what is needed to get us moved to a new spot in life. I wish you good health and fortune with your new employment. My brother in law used to work for the state of Maine in an office position. He became older and more cranky, unhappy. Then he took an early retirement and went to a truck driving school in New Hampshire. He had various driving jobs Some better than others. He only did local driving at end of his career. I would have never picked him out for a truck driver. Getting away from that desk did him a lot of good. I hope you find that same spot he did. Good luck.

 

Lots of big rigs are automatics. They get better mpg.

Idk, maybe 5- 10 years ago? It's been phasing in. I'm no truck driver. I'm sure those that are could explain when, but it's been around a while.

Good luck to you sir. F.y.I when I started driving I learned in a twin stick. I also enjoy a 10 or 13 speed.

 

Slowly and steadily over the last 10-15 years or so. Once the computer controlled diesel engines became common, those automatic trans soon followed. The earlier ones weren't great but they have gotten better (some better than others I'm sure) and I'd say there are more automatic trans OTR rigs running down the road than not anymore.
The city I work for runs all auto trucks now.
