How much snow weight can one of these hold? It's really got my attention as I could realistically cover a years worth of wood very affordably! Do any of you have one? Actually the thought is that rather than filling it and moving firewood all over I could move it to the firewood for winter. I have plenty of blocks to weigh one down and keep it from blowing away too.
I think heavy, wet snow would take that down. I also wonder about high winds. I do think you could add some posts down the center to help prevent a collapse.
Up in our area that would never hold up, some real heavy duty ones bit the dust in the ice storm. Come March when you get the wet heavy snow, you'll be digging your wood out from underneath it.
Bums me out I have most of what I need except the PVC to do it. O well another idea bites the dust! I'll continue with my plan to make a shelter by the fence next spring I guess.
Folks were using these in this area as portable garages or sheds They were a fad that didn't last long due to snow issues and the fact that the local council in town banned them as too many and too unsightly.
Pete, for maybe a little more, you could build a real structure that will hold up to the elements very well. A few 4x4 posts, some 2x, and a bunch of pallets. When mine needs a new roof (probably won't for at least a few years), I'm thinking to put steel on it. You may even be able to do mostly pallets. You could stretch the cost out over the summer. Just throwing out some idears.
I don't know if you remember the old shed or not but it was my avatar for years. I made it out of pallets and the total cost after paint and roof was $160. It held 2 full cords sadly when I put the fence up it had to go. The one I want to build now would be a smaller version of what bogydave has. The shelter here would have been almost free basically all I needed was the PVC as I have everything else. I can get the PVC for $1 a section at a local reseller so I might have had $25 or $30 into it total. O well...
But, I have doubts the hoop house would hold up in a good ice/heavy snow storm. Go for the gusto and be the little pig with the brick s___house. Sadly, I won't remember your other shed unless you post a pic. So, you're gonna' model it after Dave's eh? My shed is a lot like his, but it's in Michigan. Just sayin'.
Im planning a Bogeydave style woodshed this spring too. Im going to tweak it a little by using a lot of pallets Ill start a thread on that later as Ive got lots of questions and dont want to hijack yours. The hoop shed looks like a great quick easy cheap way to cover your wood but I would have to agree with others on here I doubt seriously that it would last through snow, ice, and strong winds.
I put the fence up and after finding the boundaries myself I realized just how big it was. My friend came and took it to use with their wood supply. I almost cried as I watched it go down the road I was proud of that achievement. I have 82" by 49" pallets now so those will be laid on the ground in the new shed.
