Cold Start

How many of you use the cold starting procedures for your saws, outside of winter conditions? I tried starting my new (to me) saw with the cold start procedure last night and I am 99% sure that I flooded it, immediately. Just curious if I should only need to use cold starting during the winter.

 

On my Husky 555 I use the cold start year around but don't insist on much of a first burp. If it makes any noise it is time to take the choke off. If I have used the saw in the last hour or so I will try it with just the fast idle because I don't consider it cold.

 

My BR600 will flood pretty easy. If it was running today you probably wont need to choke it.
If I smell gas when pulling the cord, its WOT time. then pull till it starts.

 

That will happen with a new saw until you get used to what it wants. I don't do anything different in cold vs warm weather. But, with my bigger saws, I have to be careful not to pull the rope too many times with the choke on, whether I hear a "burp" or not. I usually don't hear it on the 880, but 2 pulls on full choke is plenty. After that, ill switch to high idle and it will usually start on the next pull.

But I'll try the 2 pull thing next time on a warm day.

IMO, cold start is more a fuel issue than a temperature issue

HighCountry for my 7910 it's 1 pull full choke wheather it pops or not then no choke and usually 2 pulls starts it. If I don't do it that way it floods and it's WOT and pull til it starts. DexterDay turned me on to that procedure after telling me his 6400 was like that. I bet your 6421 is the same.

 

It had already been started that day, so I probably should not have pulled more than once with the choke. I just got excited and wanted to hear her purrrrrrrr, but then I smelled the fuel and knew I was an idiot. Hopefully, I get to spend a little more time with her after work tonight. Got home later than expected yesterday and didn't get more than 10 minutes to mess around. Not nearly enough time!

 

I always choke them. Some saws are easier to flood, you just have to find that harmony in the saw-niverse and go with it.

Are you using the decompression valve?
My 445 starts better without using it, I don't think it's really needed on that saw all but it does start better without using

 

I have a rag tag band of mixed saws and they are all just a little different. Echo is cold blooded and will stall after first starting if you try to goose it...it likes to idle for 10-15 seconds then will take off. 550 likes by the book cold start procedure, unless ran in last half hour. My 2166 will flood on me once in a while. Choke till burps, then 2-3 pulls on high idle and usually it stirs to life. My old 350 likes choke and high idle and burps on second pull like clockwork. Choke off and one pull to running.

Saws are all a little different, but that's what makes them fun!

 

This is why i use only electrical saws , no hot , no cold , no flooded , no decomps

372 xtorque full choke till it pops then no choke 2 pulls. 550 seems to roar to life on 2 to 4 pulls with choke on. 266 is full choke 5 pulls and she's running.

 

When it doesn't start after pulling on it 10 or 20 times and you pulled the plug and it's dry, maybe there's no fuel in the tank

 

My solution for that, pull the plug dry it out,, less work
