The electric Co came by said they needed to trim some trees back. Ended up having them totally top a few that they were awesome enough to do so I could just take them down. One was a 60ft white oak and another was a 50ft hickory. As well as a ton of oak they just trimmed back.
Ran my little ms 192 rear handle to clean up all the tops and that little saw just rocks in that stuff. I great little saw is just so darn handy.
Wish I had some photos but most was being dropped on my driveway so I had to stay pretty busy. Those guys can drop a lot of wood with a bucket truck.

I couldn't do what I do almost every day without my top-handles. I even recently aquired an MS171 and that little saw now has a solid position in my arsenal.

I do find humor when guys suggest a 70cc saw for limbing. I always think they have never processed the top of a huge oak into firewood then. Lol

Just like I try to avoid processing evergreens because of the abundance of hardwoods here, some live in areas where softwoods are al you have and there's a big difference in how they come apart. I wouldn't think twice about walking the trunk of a big evergreen with my 441 and zipping through all the little branches that stick out. But taking apart an oak/maple/ash/etc top is a different game altogether. Gimmie something small, light and zippy please.

Just recently picked up a ms170 . What a great little saw for mics. Yard work . Kind of funny the older I get I find myself using smaller and smaller saws. Growing up is fun sometimes.

Lots of differences in softwood and hardwood trees. Here where i live the only hardwoods to cut are growing in peoples yards, mostly elms and maples. I only have limited exp cutting these trees but i can vouch that a 50cc saw with a 20 inch bar is not a good tool for cutting a green elm. Hardwood trees have tops that could take hours to proccess. There is more hardwood trees over in western oregon oaks, alder and madrone. I dont even know what madrone looks like but its supossed to be great firewood. Alot of guys out here laugh at folks who got 20 inch bars on 70cc and up saws, but in hardwoods that big motor and short bar power through those tough hardwoods.

That's where I spend some quality time with a little super-light 33 cc Tanaka, cleaning up tops of down deciduous trees. Often-times, a 25 cc Tanaka polesaw goes in first, giving the high sticks a haircut, saving potential headaches. A polesaw also avoids lots of footwork, another plus amid a tangle of brush. Echo CS341T, and a solid 50cc saw like my 5105 are what I prefer for the small stuff.

I'm in my early 30s and looking for a smaller saw, it just doesn't make sense to lug and fight. Something smaller being easier to handle when exhausted climbing in brush seems safer as well.

No license or anything needed that I know of. But I only cut on private property with owners permission. Of coarse I don't ask our government. I do not want to give them any ideas of how to cost me more money.

I get most of mine for free. Some from people I work with some from Craigslist. There is a tree service a few miles from me that leaves wood and mulch out front free for the taking!

The US Forest Service(Circus) charges for wood cutting permits. I think it was around $30 USD for a four cord permit.

If cutting on public land it's $20 for four cords, or $5 per cord, with a 12 cord per year limit. If it's private land, no permit is needed, and there's no limit.

Circus ??? Now listen to know what means Circus
Here noone that is not pro logger or have a logging company can cut not even branch , if the forest police catch you they take the saw , the truck , and everything else that you have with you , and you have problems with the law
No any kind of licenses from goverments or any others forest services to personals ( only to pro loggers or companies )
    And now the circus
if you want to collect firewoods you must deal with the logging company or the logger , they only can give you the green light for cutting and only in the area that they have take for logging from the forest service or goverment
even with this you cant cut a tree ( only with friendly deal under the table ) you just can waiting the fallers cut the trees and then you can go and collecting everything that they dont need ( example branches , or maybe trees that are not good for many reasons )
Even if you have private area with trees you can not cut them if you dont have special licenses for this work and you can use the woods only for private job and not sale them for fire woods or for industry
The price is not standard and depent on how good guy is the boss of the logging company , usually they are good guys and call the peoples for collecting fire woods for free many times they close theirs eyes fall some trees and leave them to the peoples

Is this just on land/forests owned by the government or does all this apply to privately(personally) owned land as well? Ie. If it's my land, my tree and my saw, I can cut it or am I getting in trouble for this?

You just go to the forest service and tell them to give a special license for cutting in your private land its 5 minutes procedure , then the next day a employee come and mark the trees that you want to cut , this is all
This start because some '' clevers '' writte to papers forest areas for private, they start fires , or night logging procedures , selling the woods without invoices and millions of euros lost every year in black market .

so the goverment make a law that say cutting tree without licenses is the same as criminal , trying to save forest from all theese bad situations ,
the fees are heavy , taking saws, cars, trucks if you are illegal and you maybe pay over of 20-30 thousands euros or in extreme situations going to prison
