Looks like all the subcompacts are death traps regardless:

As the formerly proud owner of a 1987 mazda 323 (I was in high school) You will never see me driving a 900 pound car in and amongst 80k+ pound trucks.

I used to ride street bikes in and amongst 80k+ pound trucks so this is definitely a step up in that regard.

Looks like the back seat should be mounted rear facing with an optional .50BMG

I've witnessed three vehicle fatalities. Two were motorcycles. One was a sub compact. I'll pay the few extra dollars to drive a bigger vehicle and keep physics on my side.

But for in town <25 mph driving this car doesn't seem too bad. Safer than a motorcycle -- one of the accidents I witnessed was in town; a Subaru pulled out into traffic and hit the motorcyle, no helmet and his head was pinned under the axle.

If they can build something like this with the stated mpg for under 10k that could last for a 100k miles I would consider it.......and save my Jeep with a V8 for snow days and pellet hauling.

Do you really think that a 3500 lb. car will be that much safer when dealing with a 80K lb. truck??

The weight of the vehicle is certainly no guarantee of the outcome of getting rammed by a 40+ ton object. The strength of the structure would play a much bigger role. Heck, a super lightweight vehicle with an ultra strong cage could "bounce" off the larger vehicle.

I would think your chances of surviving a collision of that magnitude are far greater in a modern sub-compact than say.... A 70s era sedan.

Right, but how strong of a cage can they make out of 900 pounds of steel for $6800?

All things considered with modern engineered vehicles I'd rather have the one that weighs more.

One of their early videos about the safety of their design essentially claimed just that. They said on a side impact the rigid roll cage would bounce off the vehicle that hit it. I can't find the video now where they said that so maybe they had to back off that claim.

From a NYT article last summer, Driving a Work in Progress From Elio Motors
"...Some of the claims about the car remain to be verified. Mr. Elio said it would achieve 84 m.p.g. on the highway and 49 in the city, but those numbers are based on the company’s computer projections for an engine that has not made its way into the car — not real world Environmental Protection Agency figures. A handout Elio Motors has been circulating says the vehicle has a five-star safety rating, which the company later recanted in an e-mail. Mr. Elio said that such a rating was in fact “anticipated” and based upon computer simulations. He showed the simulations with his iPhone, and they made it look as if the vehicle’s occupants could survive a truck bumper broadside at 35 m.p.h. Mr. Elio said that some of a planned batch of 25 prototypes would be used for actual crash testing."

Having been a truck driver I have seen and been in a few nasty accidents. Its almost always the cars fault! I dont care what your in you get hit by a fully loaded 40,000 to 45,000 truck your in a world of pain. Iv watched cars get pancacked and even hit a mustang that cut me off. There wasnt anything left..... A 2500 dodge cut me off in NY and that was all she wrote I didnt get a ticket but the driver went to ICU and the truck is no more. That was at 25mph....

I never cut off trucks because I know they can't stop or slow down too fast.. If everyone did this there would be far fewer accidents.. People need to give each more room on the highways so you have a better safety cushion and possibly an evasive route to escape a situation..

We could do a better job of routing trucks around towns and villages where they are likely to encounter lots of smaller vehicles. Local pickup and delivery is fine, but around here, trucks try to maneuver in tight quarters due to stupid GPS devices routing them through the center of town vs. the state highway 200 yards away. They are also doing a number on the roads themselves. Do you know what a 40 ton truck does to asphalt stopping downhill dozens of times every day? One busy intersection here got so bad that I avoided it if at all possible for months until it was recently re-built at great expense to the taxpayers.

One advantage of taking the motorcycle safety training course is that it makes you much more aware of these issues. I think my driving overall has improved considerably after having taken the course and ridden street bikes, even though I no longer own one.

Unfortunately routes are preset by most carriers it isn't just GPS its pre routed GPS systems Qualcomm is the main one. You go off route you get docked miles ( pay ). The trucks do a real number on roads for sure but a ton of my deliveries where in the city which meant driveng in the city not the freeway. Its such a pita! Chicago o man Chicago lets not forget Philly. I am glad I don't drive anymore everybody is in such a hurry to get there and trucks get a bad rap because most people have never tried to drive one. If you havnt been in the seat you will never understand or your a complete idiot super trucker…. Ya they exist too. I swear some of them really think they are cowboys but thats a very very small percentage. Most want a paycheck and to be alive to see there families! It isn't the good old days of drive to fall over its very heavily regulated now.
