No don't cut the tree anymore, my brother in-law...

    will finish!

    In February my brother in law had a red maple :)yes:) cut down. As the trimmer stood with his chain saw
    preparing to make wood shavings of what was downed, my brother in-law said, "No, just leave it cut in those lengths, my brother in-law will handle the rest."

    I was excited when he called. I loooooooooooooooooove splitting wood! :thumbs:

    I've trimmed a lot of the "tinder" size branches and started a couple weeks ago on the 3 ft logs. Keep in mind, I have no power tools......

    I've got a lot of work as you can see and will gleefully work on it over the next few weekends to prepare for the winter firepits we share!

    I think when I try my next 3 ft piece I'll swing into the end, not the bark side. Then take my other maul and swing into the other end.
    That should creat a full length crack. Maybe not straight, but I'll let you know when I try.

    For splitting long stuff, you've picked one of the best because it splits so nicely and usually splits clean too. I would not hesitate to split a 3' piece of that just from one end of it. For example, using hydraulics, you can split a 24" log usually with the wedge going into the wood only a few inches. A 3' piece, perhaps you may have to go a foot into it but that is just a SWAG.     That's how it was traditionally done: drive a wedge into the end, and then follow the split down the log with additional wedges. Abraham Lincoln famously used to split black locust logs for rails and fence posts using this method.

    My BIL made up a bunch of these, they really burned great. Having never seen one I was skeptical at first. Now I believe.
