After sitting in a corner of the shop for a few months, got to finish it!
I don't want to fool with a burner & tank so I plan on using brickette's or charcoal. The fire will be on the lower disc surrounded by a ring that the upper cooking disc rests on. I have a 4" pipe running into the bottom of the fire disc with a damper on the bottom. Do you guy's think it will burn without a smoke path other than a not so tight fit between the ring. I'm thinking that will really keep the heat under the disc.
I thought that I'll try it with first "burn off" fire and see what happens. From what I understand you want pretty high temps for this type of cooking, and with the cooking disc resting on that ring, I thought that (if the fire burns) it'll get good and hot.

    Fuelrod,
    Way cool man! Great Build
I am no engineer nor do I pretend to be one. But, from my experience with HVAC systems it seems to me that the only vent "relief" hole is at the center of the top pan. I would think the heat will be pretty intense right there. If that's what you're going for then you're probably good. Otherwise, it will be like trying to blow air into a paper bag. Just my input.
    Good Luck.

I have to agree, I think I was a victim of wishfull thinking. It just almost seems that charcoal brickette's almost do that, just melt away with no real smoke or fire action. I'll modify that ring before I burn it off today.
That hole is getting filled Marty, it's the last thing I need to do. These (discs) are just replacement disc for a regular (ag) plow disc.

It seems that most folks use propane & a burner.

1/4" gap gives me a few sq/in more than the 4" air intake. It worked with wood chunks! DSCN7835.JPG DSCN7839.JPG DSCN7838.JPG

That creation is freaking awesome fuelrod. I had no idea what you were going to cook in it until you showed us. I didn't wanna ask and sound too dumb.....

Where did the inspiration come from....is this something that's factory built out there or is just a figment of your imagination that came to light !!!???

Great fabrication skills too, may I add.

Our lard rendering kettles only have a loosely fit shroud surrouding them, and the smoke finds its way out just fine. Well, now we use a 500,000 btu propane burner, but it does the same. I think your openings look better than adequate....and letting it escape all the way around the perimeter probably makes it heat pretty darn evenly.

Is this a figment of you imagination that came to fruition or is it a copy of a factory cooker fuelrod? Great fab skills too. I'm liking it big time.

Notice the dual post up above..?? I thought I posted the first one, then when it didn't show up immediately I couldn't remember exactly what I wrote so a second one was posted....now this morning both are there. Is that something wanky that happens with the forum and has that occurred with anyone else....or should I chalk it up to user error ?? ...for now, I'll go with the latter. But anyway fuelrod, that really is a nice build (for the third time).

It's really only a wood fired skillet! I had never heard of them either until I started looking at a "smoker" forum for advice & Ideas when I built mine. It seems that most use a propane burner for the heat, I just didn't want to fool around with the tanks & making sure I had fuel.
You can buy just the disc with handles on it for not much at Agri supply - cheap. Search Results | Agri Supply®
I ordered my disc from them, they have a good selection.
