It's so funny how all those old Japanese tractors look so familiar. And even seem to share some parts!

Parts for the Satoh are very expensive...... I bought this one for $100. It was sitting beside a shed with the hood up and a tree growing out of the block. The owner had a cracked head and took it to a shop and refused to pay the high cost of the parts.... The tree was about 2 inches around and at least eight feet tall.... anyway I loaded it up for a 100 bucks with a 48 inch finish mower included in the price...... I found a guy in SC with a complete motor for 400 and its been doing its job ever since.... I've replaced the front tires and a lower radiator hose. I'd say we have had it for 20 years now. biggest problem with this one it is one of the earlier 2 cycl models and has a reverse rotation PTO. I got 800 for the finish mower so I got a free tractor even after you figure the cost of the trip to SC.

Yea that reverse PTO on those Sato are an odball.

Wasent so much talking about engine parts as like accessories, seats, mufflers, filters, some switches tires, and I swear some cheap sheetmetal.

The 3 cycl models have the correct spline and rotation... I just didn't get lucky on finding one of those. I would have liked to have gotten the front mounted hydraulic pump and clutch set up too..... didn't happen and a used one must be made out of solid gold and plated in platinum. There was a 3 cycl model (only 2 wheel drive) at a local farm auction last year.... had the front hydraulic set up already on it.... I was excited.... had a pocket full of cash and I was finally gonna have it... but there was a guy there that wanted it at any price.... I was willing to pay 1k max since it was nice and had a 4 ft box blade... I bid 700 and the guy went right to 2k on me.... yikes!!!

Back to the splitter...... I split some today and as much as I would like to have an operators side table it would have to be smaller than the off side.... wouldn't be able to get my fat self in there to good.

I made a "4'' lift" for my splitter so it is at a more comfortable height for me. I also made a 4 way wedge and added a HF ammo can as a tool box.

Your splitter, DonE 's, my parent's mtd, Dennis' mtd all look exactly the same.

I can tell you the stock log cradles are flimsy. They are bent pretty well on my parent's.

A table would be a great addition.

Just the standard log cradle. Like what's seen on the operator's side. The holes are already there. You just need a piece of plate steel (you pick the size).

So what makes a splitter work, pneumatic from a compressor? A large spring?

I had that same splitter for many years. A friend of mine made a 4 way wedge for it, which worked great as long as you used your head. I sold that with the splitter to "Sir Saws A lot". Simple slip over the moving wedge and cutting edge was biased to push split up. Worked great and did not hurt the unit one bit. I do not have pictures, maybe sir saws does.

My Chapion 22 ton has the top tip of the maul forwardmost (angled back down from there), can a slip on 4 way wedge be fabbed for this aggressive attitude maul head?

That sentence is hilarious from non splitter persons point of view.

Ok, rained all day and I wasn't about test slick or soft ground with my healing lower back, so I grabbed this shot.
Same splitter, this pic is just newer:

I'll try to get to mine (again-tomorrow) for a few different angles with the camera.....

I built my spitter a long time ago, like in 1980 and every now & then it gets a "tweeking". This valve set up was a good mod.
I always had the valve in that position and operated it with my left leg just above my knee. I built that (red primer) hospital sink type saddle and valve lever that is much mort comfortable now. Having both hands available to manipulate & turn the log is handy. DSCN3791.JPG DSCN3792.JPG
