I figure if I can't even sharpen a normal chain, better not even attempt something like that, nevermind the crazy cost.

It is a special blend of dirt that only comes from growing Hatch chiles. The realtors never tell you about that before you buy.

Too me these saws are ideally suited for 16" or even 14" B&C. Any extra sharpening, because of extra wear on less teeth, is minimal and certainly offset by the lower cost of the chain. Again logger chain and Left coast supply are my go too for chain and sometimes bars.

Eric VW , perhaps you could ask your wife how she handles dirty wood?

Barcroftb , how did you miss that one buddy?

I've heard carbide chain cuts really slow, but Ive never used it myself.

All of the dirt is going to be in the bark, so if that can be easily removed (spud bar), it could be worth it. But I personally wouldn't sweat sharpening an 18" chain - try a 60" 172DL you just dragged through the dirt. :picard:

It's not dusty here, but it can get muddy in spots, so for me a lot of times the side that was on the ground can have a lot of dirt in it. If I have to cut on that side, I try to do it in a way where I'm not dragging the dirt through the cut.

Welcome aboard. Best advice I can give is sell the Craftsman and put those funds towards a newer and larger saw ASAP. Unless you are cutting small logs and only a few cords a year, the larger and higher performing saw will save you a fair amount of time and justify the expense. :dex:
