Walked by neighbors property this is what I saw! looked around a little I can't believe someone hasn't gotten hurt. I saw my neighbor there today I stopped and let him know of my concerns. He told me his brother is the one cutting and has burnt up two chainsaws. I said your brother should take a course (or at least search the internet) on how to cut a tree before someone gets hurt or killed. NO Notch just start on the backside and cut through. WOW I don't know if he will but I feel better for mentioning it. I told the neighbor that I would try to pull the barber chairs down with my winch so that when his kids come up they won't have one of these coming down on them.
Good for you for mentioning that! You'd think the guy would have learned after the first one! Those scare me just looking at the pics....
Maybe the guy has been smoking something funny before cutting on the trees. They do look scary and yes before anyone goes out into those woods to play around they should be pulled down.

It might be worth your time to physically show him. Luckily these are small and most straight up trees. If he gets into a large leaner, his head could end up flying through the air like a soccer ball. He may also be untrainable, which you can judge in person. Maybe you can lay them all down for him, and get some practice yourself. Stupid people create many opportunities

TreeStuff carries it too. TreeStuff - To Fell a Tree by Jeff Jepson I gave my copy of this book to BCPLLC last time he was in town. Then I had to buy another copy, cause it's such an excellent reference. Don't bother giving a copy to this guy though. Clearly it's "not his first time" and he's pretty sure he "knows what he's doing".
I'd lend it out but I definitely want a copy ready. I've read it twice, quick read and good to remember how to handle the harder trees I don't encounter often enough as a wannabe arborist.
Ignorance is bliss. A lot of us were lucky to grow up watching someone teach us to properly drop tress, I can't blame anyone for not knowing any better if they didn't have those experiences. Well, maybe I can blame them. It's SO easy these days to pick up your phone, go to youtube, and search "how to cut down a tree" right there in the field.
To his benefit, these are all small trees. But what was he thinking? Or was he thinking? He certainly was not trying to "hinge cut" trees to make it better for deer. And what's with all the angled cuts? I've never understood why people don't cut straight. Especially those who cut in a V. Those are really scary but I've seen many farmers doing it.
They were clearing a lot by me last year,, it was all free wood and people were going in there cutting trees and getting firewood out, I got some wood out too , I saw a bunch of Cuts Like That on smallish trees, no notch, just angle cut all the way through the tree, what puzzles me about that too was if they were getting firewood why did they leave two, to two-and-a-half foot stumps I cut quite a few of those stumps off and threw them in the trailer it's all firewood to me
The "V" cut is popular with township road crews here. See it all the time where they are clearing the intruding trees from the roadway. I've watched a lot of professional tree cutters doing their thing on YouTube....never once seen a stump with a V in it. If it works for them then OK I guess? I am most assuredly the last guy who has any basis for critiquing someone's felling techniques. I like to cut trees up, not down.
