All the wood I burn is given to me. I have been fortunate to not have to buy firewood in the 15 plus years that I have heated my home with it. A guy I work with had posted on Facebook he had a small tree blow down in his yard. I missed the post by an hour and was informed someone we know wanted it, no biggie. I was asked today at 4am when I got off work by this guy coming in if I wanted a blow down in his yard. Seems another one came down after the 6" one the other fella took. Being a hoarder I said yes. Didn't ask what or how big. He said I should bring a saw when I come. I drove by on the way home at oh-dark-early just to look. It appears to be a cherry tree, from the headlights of about 19" diameter and straight! Gotta love it. But like this thread stated, fire wood is funny for me. It seems I go 3-4 months with no prospects, and all of a sudden, I get swamped and end up for a week or two with nothing but cutting on my days off. At 52 years old, I don't drink, my wife put an end to chasing wild women around, so I guess it is the next best thing going! I will get some pictures up when I start cutting. Be safe fellas.
That is the best kinda firewood there is! Cherry is was some people drool over. And over and over! Also glad your wife has put an end to chasing wild women around.....does she only chase calm ones now?
Gotta love "free" wood! Cherry is good stuff, it will dry fast and smell way gooder. Hoarding firewood keeps me outa trouble. At least for the most part I spose my wife may also have something to do with that.
I too have have never paid a penny for wood in close to forty years, and like you iceman, I never know when or where wood comes from. I do cut some of my own trees but try not to. Wood just appears to me. I've been with the same girl/wife since 1975 and that's who I chase, but she runs pretty good. But sometimes she runs slow and lets me catch her. And I do like to drink beer. As Ben Franklin said, " God gave us beer to show us that he loves us and wants us to be happy" I don't know if it is true or not, But it works for me!!!
I also hoard craft beers, I love beer, just don't drink much. I drank 3 beers in 2015. My adult children on the other hand love the $15 six packs of craft beer I buy and have no problems drinking it, LOL, now if I could just get them to stack firewood. I do have issues with sweet tea though, that I will drink the heck out of, LOL!
Iceman7668 that's exactly 3 more beers than I drank in 2015! My goal this summer is to have a beer....
Iceman, you have a good record going. Not sure about that lack of chasing though... Hope you are still interested in looking at least.
I know the feeling well - "when it rains, it pours" - and it's been monsoon season at my house lately. I bought a lifetime supply of firewood and lumber with my house. I've already got a couple years worth of firewood put up, and a garage bay full of lumber milled. But there's no chance for a break just yet - in fact things are really starting to ramp up now, and there's currently no end in sight. I had 8 red maples come down in a single windfall this year, and I'm having another 5 trunk red taken down this year, cause it's hanging over my garage and it's starting to rot out at the stump. But I won't be able get to any of that for a while yet, cause I'm still busy cutting up trees for 2 of my neighbors. But now I have to mow my lawn again before I can get back to that. And then there's the 3-4 cords I already have parked next to the garage that still need splitting and stacking!! Between my day job and all the extra work I make for myself, I end up working 12 hour days, 7 days a week. But I wouldn't trade it for the world - unless I could find more time for tree and wood work.
I work 12 hour shifts at work. I get off at 4a.m. so I try to grab a few hours sleep, and then drag myself out of bed and do wood stuff. The saving grace of my shift work is its 2 days on 2 off. every other weekend is on 3 days or off 3 days. The night shift makes it tough to get an early start on days off. Feel like you been drug through a knot hole.
I hated those shifts with a passion! Worked three days per week and would end up with overtime on just those three days. Had just enough time to sleep and get back to work. At this stage of life, I only need a few days to meet needs/wants and a 40 hour week always provides extra.
I've been thinking about it quite a bit actually. But if all my work was done I think I'd be lost. Probably don't need to worry about that happening though as long as there's enough alcohol..
I also have to be on call twice a month. Usually don't get called in, but you really can't make plans until after 5pm when your on-call obligation ends. During busy times and mandatory O.T. I have worked a lot of 10-15 day stretches in a row. If I could get on day shift it might be better. At least when your off, you don't have to try and turn your sleep patterns around. 4pm to 4am makes you feel like a zombie most of the time. Man was not meant to work when the sun goes down.
