This is just getting weird! I'm back to shoulder burning, letting the fire go out during the day. At 6:30 this morning, it was 41°, at 8:00 it was 37°! And this at 4000' elevation. Forecast for Redding (in the valley) is close to 80° in the next few days and trees are starting to bloom! Instead of Winter Storm Watch, we've got Red Flag fire weather warnings and no precipitation in sight. I've recorded 6.5 in. of precipitation since July, we should be around 30 in. by now, with an annual average of 45 in. Makes me glad a lot of the fuel burned in the 2012 fire and they're logging close around my property. Going to get out and cut some wood before they close the forest due to fire danger.

I'll trade this for your cold and heavy snow.

Is it normally cold there? I guess you are at a high elevation.

Yes, in a "normal" winter we would have 2 feet of snow, overnight lows in the teens or lower and daytime highs in the 30s. Right now (1:30 pm) it's a balmy 60° and rising. Scary nice weather!

Tonight Partly cloudy, with a low around -23. Wind chill values as low as -32. West wind around 5 mph becoming calm after midnight.
    • Friday Partly sunny and cold, with a high near 9. Wind chill values as low as -33. Southwest wind 5 to 15 mph.
    • Friday Night Occasional snow showers, mainly after 2am. Low around 5. Wind chill values as low as -11. Breezy, with a south wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
We've missed most of the snowstorms this winter so starting Friday we have some snow coming in, it's time I run the sled down the road, we've had the cold, bring on the snow.

This is happening about 8 miles north of us, I'll take the fallen branches over ice anytime.

How cold do peoples houses get up there, on the inside? I'm s7re they did not use insulation 60-70 years ago up there,? With the stove my far side of the house gets to 60 with my temperatures. If I had temps like that I would be at least a 2 stove house!

You are correct. That many years ago they did not use much insulation. My brother has an old house that he is redoing a little at a time. As he does it he pulls the bricks out of the walls, puts insulation in them, and then sheets them on the outside. New windows, caulking, etc.

I am basically on the St. Lawrence River bordering Canada. This winter seems odd to many of us because we have gotten use to the milder ones we have been having for years. But it really is not any different than the ones Woodlands and I remember when we were "younger". It is just that we are older now and it feels worse. LOFL! I can say this for certain. The colder it gets, the more work it makes for keeping the property in good shape. Well, for us wood and pellet burners anyway. The heating oil truck drivers are working overtime up in this area. The extra money will be good for them.

Just loaded the Liberty with Beech & Sugar Maple, the pellet stove is rolling in the opposite corner, the basement is 82 and the living room upstairs is at 70.

We're at -12, sort of a warm up.

-15 here this morning. Slight wind right now. Boiler is eating some Ash and a little Pine this morning. It is doing better with keeping up. Just a zone or two turned down a little and a real good cleaning of the boiler and it seems to be keeping up better. School delayed two hours again. Work not delayed. :(
