Got to be the one of the most miserable splitting woods I've come across. Should be ok for shoulder seasons
That's my experience - terrible for splitting! Had to borrow a buddy's splitter in the end to go through it. Not sure how it burns, it's what I have planned for early this fall.
Nice load of wood! That sycamore you had was really all twisted up. The splits look like they were ripped apart. How did your splitter handle that tree? Sycamore if the reason I bought a hydraulic splitter. Ran into a tough sycamore that I split by hand and said that's enough of this. I burn a fair amount of Sycamore, dries quickly and as you said is good for shoulder season.
Had one crotch that stopped my splitter had to drive it back off. Usually it just cuts right through the knots. Hope it was worth the time to get.
I've never split or burned sycamore, but it and elm look related due to how it doesn't want to split.
We had a neighbor down the road that burned nothing but sycamore for two winters before he found out there was better wood to be had. He claimed he liked it.
Yep, looks mighty familiar. Its also heavy as can be when green, adding to the misery. Fortunately in all the years that I have been getting the luck of the draw with tree service wood it has only turned up once.
Sycamore has the same sort of interlocked grain as American Elm. Both were commonly used for making chair seats in traditional woodworking due to their tendency not to split. Looks like that one put up a fight! Nice work!
JCMC what is the height of the carport? How many cord will that handle? As for sycamore, yes, the worst is splitting. I've not had much of a chance to burn it but do know it is not the best but certainly not the worst.
Any wood is better than no wood. Sycamore has a lot of water green and is very heavy. When it seasons it is very light. Sycamore will burn up a little (or a lot) faster, if you have a stove expect to load more often. However, it will make heat and allow you to save your premium wood for colder weather.
The carport is 21' long x 18'wide with 6' sides has almost 12 cord of maple, oak, beech, box elder, and now sycamore will hold more.
I never burned or split Sycamore, it doesn't grow in the woods around here. I have seen a few trees in cities down in Massachusetts that must have been planted. It sure looks like it splits like elm in the photos, that we do have a lot of.
It like trying to split the letter "S" It is the only wood I have split here in Indiana that rotates while I split it like a chicken on a rotisserie. Burned ok, but you will get a lot of splinters when you pick it up to load it after it dries out.
