I have the 8.1 liter with allison, I love it. With the jeep in tow, going across I-70 through Kansas to Colorado. It never missed a heart beat.

A one way plane ticket to florida will save you close to 10K on a new truck. Just my 2 cents

2003-2006ish 2500HD with a 6 liter and Allison trans will do what you want. Honestly I'd look for a crew cab, I've owned a 94, 04 and 06 with extended cabs, my current 04 is a crew cab and I love it. It will cost a little more but it's hard to beat the convenience of 2 more real doors. As a whole it's hard to be a Chevy truck and in my opinion the Allison transmission is the best trans in any of the light duty pick ups. At stock power levels they're darn near indestructible.

I think the Allison trans was only available with a Duramax or the 8.1. At the end of the 8.1 lifespan, the Allison is only available with a diesel.

That kind of usage, definitely do not be afraid of the 8.1L. It is basically a re-worked Chevy Big-block, proven reliable for decades. Overkill? Yeah but since when has that been a bad thing around here?

I run both the 8.1 and the Triton V-10 in 1Ton dump setups - both very capable engines. The V-10 always sounded "tinny" and seemed to have to spool up a bit before it pulled but going down the road neither would bat a eyelash with a jag on. My nod would go to the 8.1/Allison setup
The gasser market always seems to have lower mileage trucks and the economics of maintaining a diesel(especially some of the problem years where a set of injectors is the same as a new 6.0L) really doesn't make much sense.

The carfax reports are available for both trucks the lower mileage one was traded at a Toyota dealership and shipped to auction after a month on the lot - which is not that uncommon.
anything flooded/salvaged would normally have gone straight to an auction or title changed hands privately first

Except for the piston slap. Which wasn't really a problem.

My theory has always been if the original owner traded it in for a different brand he was unsatisfied with it for one reason or another. Maybe a problem truck?

After having a 6.0 3/4 ton Suburban for 6 years, I have been loving my recently acquired 8.1/Allison. Different game entirely and mileage difference is trivial.

A Toyota Tundra would out perform any 3/4 ton Ford or Chevy with the exception of a V10 or 8.1/Allison....just sayin

Umm...no it wouldn't. On paper, maybe. In the real world, probably not. HD trucks have bigger brakes, stiffer frames, weigh a couple K more, taller gears, etc. Different critter than a half ton truck when it comes to moving heavy stuff with ease.

Not looking to start a brand war, here. Toyota makes good trucks. So do Ford and GM. I agree that 1/2 trucks have come a LONG way in the past 10 or so years...but if you asked a 1/2 ton truck and a 3/4 ton truck to pull/haul the same thing every day...that 1/2 ton is going to get tired quick.

I have one, so I will correct it for you, Toyota makes reliable transportation vehicles. it is far from a truck, even my wife sees the difference. if we are going out in general she will head for the Toyota, when we need to haul something and need a TRUCK she heads straight for the CUMMINS

No way a blundra would ever stand up to my 06 f250, 5.4. When the 5.4 spools up its just fine and gets the job done, mine doesn't have tall gears in the rear end but does ok haulling 7k of trailer and SS. On the other hand my 99 350 v10 ( first generation plus early build)) with tall gears doesn't even know it's there. f250 and f350 with the 7.3 are almost identical underneath the springs in the back are different weight rating.
one point to note an extra cab with a long box takes the better part of a country mile to turn around, My friends 03 is a real nice ride.

What kind of mileage do you get out of that? I'm sure you can afford to buy a lot of gas with what you saved over buying a dirtymax though.

The "D"s excel and longer distance heavy haul situations, short runs around town not so much when factoring in the higher maintenance costs & extra coin for fuel

My 8.1/Allison gets between 10-12 mpg. When hauling a full load of wood or trailer it gets 9-11 mpg. It will haul some wood. I did get a Duramax because it was the pre emission , regen, urea tank. I figured if I didn't get a diesel now then I never would.

I still can't believe the prices for used trucks -- 15k for a 12 year old truck :(
