Tonight's load is mostly red oak rounds with only one split. Really packed it in there nicely with different sized rounds too. Should be just what the doctor ordered as we are already below zero out there. Looks like this will continue even into next week but one short spell of slightly warmer with a little bit of snow for Friday night. Not much, 1-3" is all then more cold. I'm really beginning to think more and more about spring.... Maybe a week in some warmer air would help but doubt the wife wants to head south.

Ya. It's a cold one for sure Dennis. Sounds like you have a nice fire for the night. Stay warm. Your wife is smart. She knows where all the best wood is. And a good man who knows how to keep her warm with it.

Yeah Dennis this next week plus looks like no fun. Looking at the 10 day forecast only 2 days out of the teens, one at 20 and another at 21. I know plenty of other places get colder but I'm done with this winter and it's still January!

I am done with this weather! I have plenty of wood but man we are blowing through it with these temps! I actually started letting the house temps drop to 68-70 just so I'm not pushing as much wood through the stove.

Dennis, what do you set your stove at before retiring for the night when it's really cold like this? I usually set for 1, but I'm thinking I'm not burning hot enough after the primary burn happens and could be getting more heat and burning the coals down better if I was setting for 1.5 or some such.

    What do you think?

Everything was going so smoothly until this recent cold front. We were at seasonal average temps, I was stretching out the burns. Burning only 1 stove 24/7 and the other in the evening.

Then, BAM, single digit lows with wind for the next 8+ nights.

It's going to be cold here for a while now, looking ahead, next Monday is even going to be 3 below... Last time I looked it was a whopping 5 degrees out... Every year I think I'm going to run short on wood but I never do.... I have next years wood sitting next to this years wood,, so worst comes to worst I could grab some standing dead from the other wood racks... Most of my wood I harvest is standing dead or blow downs... Nothing really green to speak of.. unless it's in the way to open a trail... PH draft is just cracked and the house is 74 ... can't complain there ,,,with just 4 splits of softwood, 2 year old silver maple.. Esse cookstove has the far end of the farmhouse at 70... we should keep up fine here... not even hammering the wood,,, burning some coals up at the end...

Same here, filling every nook and cranny of my fire box and burning at #1 for the most part, maybe a little less for the overnight load.

PH needs numbers on the draft so it would be easier to tell the wife where to set the controls, not just crack it...

Sounds like you'll be getting some nice heat from that load. We're are in for a - 30 degree weather tonight, then tomorrow night will be -25.

Starting Friday night we could see some snow with wind gust up to 32 mph.

Wow, and I thought we were cold here... Looks like you'll be in for some serious windchill temps... well all you can do is keep the stove full. It's a good feeling when it's this cold to have a heat source that doesn't rely on a power source... That's why I could never see burning pellets, power goes out when it's 25 below, you run the generator until your out of gas,,, there's white out conditions on the roads, so you can't even see to drive to go get gas... Burning wood will allow you to survive.... you can even cook on your stove if need be... Wood heat is 100% dependable...

Either at 1 or .75 is the normal setting.

Update on last night's fire. We are still using up that wood we left uncovered. I think most know what happened; an experiment with not top covering some wood. It was ash, pin oak and red oak. So last night I packed the stove the most I've done so far this year with all oak. That was, I think just before or just after 8:00. I had a bad night with pain and got up a bit after 2:00. Stove was about half full of nothing but coals. Didn't think I could put much in but wanted to go back to bed and not have to get up so I added 2 rounds and a split and went to bed.

Up again 2 hours later and those 3 pieces were just coals again. I opened the draft to 2 and went to bed. As stated, I had a bad night. Did not get up until around 9:30 this morning and was surprised to find the house at 68 degrees. For us, that is cold. It was 82 when I went to bed so we lost 14 degrees overnight. We're back to 80 again. Tonight I might try half ash (from the good stuff) and half oak to see how it goes.

Let me tell you I am not a happy camper to have to get up during the night to fix the fire. As I've stated several times, it is not going to happen any more that our wood does not get top covered before the snow flies. It has made a tremendous difference in how much heat we get from the wood and how long the fire lasts. Also do not like that we are getting so much ash. Normally in this weather we would go 4 days before emptying ashes. Now it is every other day. I'll be very happy when we have used up this batch of wood.

This is being implemented on new versions of Ideal Steel betas, and we will be getting a modification, too. My wife saw one at the factory - notches into the rounded corner of the ash lip. Said she liked it, but also said (unprompted) that she would much more like it on our PH.

Save that experimental wood for warmer days, you need the good stuff for this weather.

I just ran into some less than optimal wood a few days ago. It was 3 year old Oak in my shed but it just doesn't burn as well as the other stuff. I put it aside and went to the next row. I kind a think the top of my rows burn better than the bottom.

Would rather have winter & snow than this,

    Jet stream will change
We'll get our winter conditions back
Maybe with vengeance, just hope when it changes we got some snow & not just cold & wind.

I don't know how the PH draft controls are or what they look like but just wanted to add. On my new Buck that I just installed this year I masked for some lines and just brushed them with high heat paint so it was much easier to know exactly where I was.

    First,

Thanks to the folks who setup this forum and website, I like the crowd and format. Refreshing.

Bummer to hear the rounds are a pile of coals Backwoods.

We have been burning rounds with this latest cold snap, I am growing more and more being a fan with the fire view in these conditions we are experiencing. No sweat getting home late form work to find at least 200 degrees and a good coal bed to get things going again.
