NH Thieves Raiding Woodpiles For Firewood

CANDIA, N.H. (CBS) — Janine Richardson couldn’t believe it when she and her husband went to bring in some firewood to heat their home and it was all gone.

“We don’t use oil at all,” said Richardson. “We heat by wood solely so it was cold, it was cold that night, luckily we had little scraps around so we burnt that for the night.”

Police in Candia New Hampshire says it’s happened at least twice this month. Heavy piles of firewood have been stolen from people’s property.

“I haven’t seen that in this area,” said Candia Police Chief Mike McGillen. “I can’t recall having many investigations like this.”

A cord of wood can be worth up to $250, and police are not sure if the wood is being stolen by people who want to sell it, or if they need the wood to keep warm.

“If someone was desperate and needed the wood they could just come to the town,” said Chief McGillen. “There’s a lot of good people here who would give out wood, give out oil, give assistance in a heartbeat, they don’t need to go around taking it.”

A cord of wood is about eight feet long, four feet wide, and four feet tall.

For Janine Richardson, it’s not about the money. It’s the principle that someone stole from her home. And that all of her hard work was wasted.

“So obviously we’re angry because we cut all our wood and I’m the one who splits it with the log splitter my husband built me,” said Richardson.

Nothing worse than a thief....except maybe a firewood thief.

Words can't even begin to describe how mad I would be or what I would want to do to someone who stole my firewood! Thing is its not like you can replace it for a few years either.

If one was resourceful enough and really needed wood they could get pallets, constuction cut offs, offer to cut up downed limbs in people's yards, etc... A little hard work is all that is needed. I hope their conscience weighs heavy on them as we go through this cold spell.

Stealing their hard work and trespassing is pretty low in my book.

Those here who were at ''the other site'' about 2 yrs back might remember the story of how I reacted when discovering the lowlife "neighbor" to my east in Aug 2009 had stolen 2-3 wheelbarrows worth from the stack along the fence.I went out back about 9AM one Saturday morning to look for some lumber under a tarp near that stack & noticed that big hole in the stack. Then smelled something smoldering in his firepit. The POS had helped himself over the past several nights while sitting out there all night drinking beer & smoking weed.

Now I have nothing wrong with drinking beer & used to have a little of the other stuff many many many years ago.But I also have NO USE for a thief,I don't care what they're stealing or who from either.I work my azz off for everything I own,why should some deadbeat scumbag get something they're too lazy and/or stupid to work for from someone who does?

Anyway...long story short - I jumped 2 fences, run up their steps, dam near ripped that aluminum screen door off the hinges while yelling "GET OUT HERE YOU EFFING THIEF OR I'LL DRAG YOUR AZZ THROUGH THE WINDOW!!:mad:"

GF finally came to door,I told her what what happened, said ''get him out here now'' I'm calling the cops. She literally begged me not to,he finally came out,was still drunk & could barely stand up.Denied everything, even with the wood STILL smoldering 20 ft away & after the cops showed up a few minutes later.... And the guy blamesd it on their "roommate who was just staying here for a couple weeks,he'll be gone tomorrow...Yeah uh huh. There was no one else living there but his GF,she worked days for DNR while he did nothing all day & night...lol.

First cop said upon appearing to lighten the mood (plus wasn't sure what I was doing to the dirtbag) "Hey,is this where I can get the free firewood? ;)"  Neighbors heard me screaming 2 blocks over & weren't sure what was happening :emb: So they filed a report - but no actual charges, would be just a 'warning' good for 1 year unless they gave me trouble again.Meanwhile I promised not to beat his azz :p(it was a real struggle at first standing less than 2 ft from him while he smirked & kept lying through his teeth about that wood burning a few feet away) and would just ignore them unless there was a future problem.... Apparantly they mustve gotten my message - according to my north neighbor who's awesome - she got some job with WA state DNR in June 2010 & took the deadbeat with here.

No longer my problem,he's Washington's now, they got tons of wood up 'dere  Though I doubt any of those boys in the rural logging towns would be as "diplomatic" as I was under the same circumstances....

You could layer some bear traps and electric fencing throughout the woodpile that ought to deter any would be thieves.
