Cylinder Clean-up for FHC

After seeing Randy's thread. I have went out and bought a whole book of 150, 180, and 220 grit, along with a roll of the 3M Scotch-brite. Have yet to use it for any cleaning. But I have used the sandpaper to clean up the port jobs I did to my 036, 55 Rancher, and the Earthquake.

 

I just did a 362XP Special cylinder using the "Wigglesworth cylinder re-conditioning system" that Randy showcased. I will be doing cylinders this way from now on. The muriatic will get used for etching concrete and occasionally removing transfer from a crank journal. But I will never again use it on aluminum parts like a cylinder. Every jug I've tried it on has been a failure due to the plating having a small pinhole in it. The pin hole allows the acid to etch below the surface of the plating, creates a leak, and ruins the jug. At least if you just sand it, the surface will be flush.

 

Was the 362 for a customer? ?

Or is it for sale? The 362 and 254 are on my short list as well.

 

So worth watching these from beginning to end.

 

Customer unit. It runs ok, still building compression with only 1 tank on a new slug. I think it's a bit heavy for a 60cc but it's pretty damm strong for 62cc too.

I wouldn't mind getting my mitts on a 254 either.

 

Not to bad. The 036 is the only one that has seen wood. The Earthquake was just put together last night and the 55 is still a work in progress.

They are nothing wild. No port timing, no squish cut, no pop up. Just widening the intake/exhaust and opening up the tranfers and port matching the exhaust/muff.

Again? I am no builder, nor would I do this to anyone else's saw. My own saws for my own experimentation, is fine. If I screw up a Cyl? I buy a new one. But anything else, other than these, they are going to Tn.

 

Once all of the transfer as removed, the pitting in the cylinder wall was very evident just by visual inspection. They make a nice bang when they hit the chitcan too.

 

Key word is "was" eh? The CL market around here for saws has been pretty thin lately. But then again I mainly focus on Stihls.

 

Anybody ever try emery cloth?

 

Too slow for heavy transfer, too coarse for final finish, buts that's just my opinion. It's a good pick for final sanding before moving to ScotchBrite to polish the cylinder surface.

 

The hardware store by my house has it. So I would venture to say if the little Mom and Pop shop has it, that HD or Lowes should have it.

 

I like to stop by an industrial supply shop every once in awhile that's good about carrying those things.
