    I want a way to get out of cleaning my wifes water feature every month when it is warm out. Sides get all algae slime snotty green and gross. Was told to throw a copper pipe in the bottom to ward off growth. Is this true and have you tried it. Said they threw pre 82 pennies in the bird bath n it worked for them.

    I suspect it will work. In the Congo, there were copper mining pits that were full of water, and didn't get algae. Pennies have very little copper, so I doubt they will work.

    Copper sulfate. Plus it keeps the water a pretty blue.

    Edit to add: pond dye might also work. That stuff is ultra concentrated so just a drop or 2 would do it.

    For what it is worth, I tried putting a piece of copper pipe in my birdbath--didn't help.
    But there are algaecides that can be bought for ponds, not sure about the price.

    I believe foot bath for cattle has copper sulfate in it. Might be a farm store close by that has it available.

    x2 ETA, I heard the scented bleaches don't do as well as the plain old regular bleach, that goes for cleaning the bathroom etc too.

    Might want to check the dissipation rates of whatever you use. I know chlorine will dissipate out of the water. You might research it and salt may kill what is growing and would be cheap.
    You might go with savemoney s idea with a manikin and dump in some bubble bath!:rofl: :lol:

    I wish I could find them but when I built this for her I took some pictures. Right before we added the water I had mama bear hop in and I squatted down and took pics to look like she was takin a bath.

    Just an idea, you could use batting floss (for sewing and quilts) in before the pump, whatever you use for the algae, it will collect the dead stuff before it gets recirculated and you can rinse it off. One more idea, chlorine tabs or bromine tabs for pools?

    Not to derail this thread but we have a couple roofs on small barns that are getting moss. I was told if we put copper on the peak of the roof it would take away the moss and no more would grow. Anyone?
