Well, my guess was spot on.

This strange weather has moved the salmonoids into deeper water.

Started at what we call the bowl and then moved toward the Vermont side of Lake Champlain slowly trolling with bottom rigs (25 - 35 feet) -- two mid level rigs (10 -18) and the outriggers skipping just under the surface. Hooked up on the deep rigs within 1/2 hour with a small brown, then a decent salmon. Caught a couple more small salmon and lost a decent rainbow at the side of the boat. Was fishing alone and could not feather the fish on the light gear and get the net in position too. The finder marked some larger bodies around the bowl edge so when I go out Sunday with the wife we will bring the jig poles and some 3/8" red tails. Normally these tactics do not work until mid June but I think this year is just different.

My guess is that if this weather continues the fish will go below the thermocline well before mid July this year and we will bouncing the bottom up toward Westport and North months before normal.

Going to get out on the Queen, (Lake George) next week with my brother and see what is happening. The local shop says the salmon are getting active in the Sounthern basin already, again a month or so early.

Anybody hear from the Hudson Valley ??? Any word on the striper run ??? I have heard it has already began.

Canadian Tire had the spend $200 and get a $50 giftcard promo yesterday. Bought 200 worth of pellets and 50 worth for more. End up knocking the price by $1.16 per bag which is good for us folks with no sales to be had anywhere :(
I did the run twice for some Canawicks & Eagle Valleys. Total of 86bags added to the stash:D

You must be very pleased with how it's turned out so far - looks excellent Will !

Extremely dry here also, have the hoses hooked up, gave the garden areas a good soaking this am, did some quick raking, but deferring any major lawn cleanup - no motorized equipment of any kind is running here until we get some rain, too risky to use right now.

Local fire warden/State Police announced that a suspect for the brush fires started is in custody this afternoon / evening, I think everyone in town is breathing a sigh of relief tonight.

Hope all reading are enjoying good weather, have a great evening,
   .

While it make perfect sense, I've never run into that precaution. Is that a recommendation, or an imposed restriction?

Been a couple of small brush flares around here so far ..... We usually have one or two forest fires each spring but so far so good. Seems inevitable to happen though.

I do not think I have seen this area so dry in April ever although my mother (84 years young) said in the early 60's it was. Had a fire back then that burned from the mountain to nearly the city line (about a 4 mile stretch). My parents built there a couple years afterwards and I remember the mess when we cleared an area for the house. Used to go home black with soot after piling brush.

Wife turned the sprinklers to manual today and says she is going to run them for a couple hours each night as one of the local brush fires is believed to have been caused by a passerby tossing a butt. Fortunately we have a deep well that produces well so water is no worry here.

I did not realize when we bought our home in the foothills that we had been experiencing a "tropical patternfor several years. We had a hunting dog, Brittany that liked to escape and ended up installing an electric cattle wire. We permanently unplugged it after the drought started. Around the same time I could see WWW down at the barn in the evening after work in the Blazer (truck in my avatar) stopping to feed the llamas, and the cat started smoking sitting over the dead grass/hay that had grown in :hair:.

A decade later as the drought continued, 140 sq miles burned down around us (lightning), everything but our neighborhood.

Hi Larry, it's just an abundance of caution - with all the fire activity here this week, the last thing the FD needs is another call.. It's tinder-dry out in the yard & surrounding woods. Can't remember the last time it was this dry, this early.

I think most folks here are of the same mind-set, I haven't heard any lawn (or wood processing) equipment at all this week.

Hi OST - if it stays dry, that's the plan here also. I'm going to get the leaves / winter cover off the garden by the road tomorrow am. Hi-Ho, Hi-Ho, it's off to rake I go ..

A co-worker who is very into fishing (used to help crew Charter boats, still does occasionally) also heard they are running early this year, we were talking about it this week. Hope your fishing trip is excellent !

Hi WW - you got it, it's -that- dry here now.. Anything w/ a motor and/or muffler is a concern, being extra careful here. Edit: Those pics are impressive, and sobering.

Recommendation. One of the fires (not in Stoddard) was thought to have been started by dirtbikers - whether it was heat from the engines, sparks from metal hitting rocks or something else was unclear from the short report I heard. Humidity has been down to 12-17% (except yesterday, which was muggy). Also breezy so any heat/spark source can start the ground litter to smoldering and by the time it actually makes a fire, a large area is involved.

Was dismayed to hear that as well, but relieved and grateful to the all the FD folks who kept us safe here, and to those who figured out who was responsible.

Been off the forum for a bit.

Got new lenses out in my frames on Tuesday and now I cant read a computer.
Give it time they said....its a product of the progressive lenses and the prescription......well its really pizzing me off.

Its better but I still find myself getting really close to the screen at work and I cant just move my eyes from the focal point in the center to the other parts of the screen. I have to move my head to keep things in focus.

My old prescription with progressive lenses did not have this issue. :headbang:
