Picked up my permit from the USFS Monday. Didn't get a chance to cut until tonight after work. Got out an hour early, came home and grabbed my stuff, hitched up my new 4x8 trailer to my Tacoma and headed to the woods! Grabbed a 1/3 cord of dead and down. It was nice to finally be back in the woods again with a saw in my hands. Been too long. The Tacoma & the trailer did very well. It's a 4 cylinder manual trans. Didn't even feel the loaded trailer until I hit pavement. I'm impressed with how much torque these little inline trucks offer. Very pleased with my new setup! Loading into a trailer instead of the truck bed was SO MUCH easier. Wish I had done this sooner. All my equipment fit in the tool box leaving the bed open for more tools. Still have yet to go get a cant hook. Forgot my jet sled though but won't do that again. Anyway I'm beat! Anyone else cut anything today?
I cut a few Purchase Orders at work today. I also had to cut a few pieces of wire loom, and a 4 conductor shielded cable for an outsource job today. This weekend I should fire the saw up though. I've got some branches to cut down to stove length, and my neighbor's pine tree that fell over is just asking for it.
I just finished up a MS460 I have been working on and noodled up some wood I had here for testing the saw. Nothing to exciting. We cannot get permits here until after May 31. I will hit the woods after that.
Thats great Joe! It sounds like you enjoyed yourself. I was thinking of getting out today but work took me later than I expected and then my priorities shifted as its my daughters birthday so I enjoyed that instead, she only turns 15 once after all! If my day isnt to busy I might get out tomorrow for my second time this year.
The woods are drying up around here nicely. But, the rains have not started yet, so no cutting from me.
That is because the area the permits are good for are up in the mountains at around 7000 to 8000 ft above sea level. There is still to much snow up that high and they do not want people up there until they know the snow pack has melted a good amount. Where I live is 6000 ft above sea level on the high plains.
I see. I was thinking maybe the roads would be to soft with frost heaving etc. Kind of like limiting commercial trucks from certain paved roads until the roads settle down.
Sounds good Joe! I use a permit from the Forestry Service also, and it is great to just get out in the woods for awhile with some regularity, and a great workout too! I don't have to travel far and usually I can find something dead or down not too far from the road. A year's worth of wood for $20 is what I pay.
It helps knowing how to work on saws and then having some contacts with tree service people. I can also get some free wood too. This tree service person just did not want to spend the money on fixing the 460 so I got it.
Yea it works out ok. It is funny because at the same time I got the MS460 he also wanted 22 chains sharpened. So the money I made sharpening the chains helped pay for the parts to fix the saw. Those are the kind of deals I like.
