Took down a couple of dead oaks this weekend. Pretty good size tree, both around 18 inches diameter. These are 2 separate trees, both in my woods, and far enough away from any road or house that I can get to them at my leisure. Here are some pics of my 2 splitting areas - I had to create a second by the driveway during mud season. Sometime in the next couple of weeks all of this is going to get stacked, it's all split now. I THINK it's around 4-5 cords, which will easily replace what I've burnt this winter. Also have about a cord stuffed under the deck, right outside my basement door. Usually keep this on hand for heavy snows, but since we didn't have any this summer, it just sat there. I'm thinking I'll just leave it there until next winter if I can convince the wife. I don't think we'll need the sleds or snowboards anymore either! Once the 2 downed trees are taken care of, and everything is stacked, I'm hoping to at least be back to 25 cords like I started the winter with. I have a few places I can cut over the late spring and summer and may try to get up to 30 cords before fall. By the way for Virginia residents, anyone else getting smoke from the Shen. Park fire? 6000 acres burning right now and even though I'm a couple of mountain ranges over we are getting an incredible amount of smoke - very hazy and low visibility right now. I really hope they can get that under control soon!

Sounds good Red Oak.....I have been pretty much grounded with a herniated disc in my back but I was able to move some stacks around and get ready for the 5+ cord of rounds I have here to be split. I should be at 28 maybe a smidge more. I have a couple friends that may come for a splitting session and then I will stack as I can. I'll feed'em good for sure.
Snow in the summer - that's when we know we're in trouble! Although to be perfectly honest I would not mind....
They think it was caused by humans but they aren't 100% sure yet. Estimates range from 7-10 days to get the fire under control. Last night it was very hazy and it caused my asthma to act up. Today it was better but still not totally gone.
I stopped burning last week and on Friday I will be cleaning the chimney and stove and putting a screen on the top of the chimney to keep birds and bats out.
I ran my splitter for a few hours today after getting a new engine installed. The old Tecumseh died (blew up) last weekend.
Sorry to hear that Eric. I cut up the first tree today and will try to get to the second tomorrow. AM rain here but afternoon sun turned it into a very nice day. Will take the maul to those trees over the next 2 weeks.
