I've been looking at some ASUS routers but getting a little lerly about the 20+ % 1 ratings, seems like someone got a bad batch of parts to make them out of. My recent experience with NetGear leaves me a bit cold to their units although it isn't the hardware but the software. Hence the DD-WRT requirement.

Smokey...I have the Asus RT-AC68U that has the stock but newest firmware on it. I do like my router though if that helps. We have at any one time 4 laptops, 5 cellphones, Tivo, camera system, Kindle, blah blah blah on a 115 meg connection...works great!

Yes some folks have, but I got tired of talking to their tech support folks across the pond and dealing with their strictly windblows focus. However the basics inside their boxes is mostly open source and DD-WRT does run in some of their units.

In this day and age it don't matter what kind of support you are looking for it all seems to come from across the pond and English is not their first language :hair:

Yes I was looking at those but got turned off by the appearance of what looked like a large number of low reviews and some talk on other forums about hardware QA issues. Seems that things in both areas of quality are going south these days. Take TWC for example. They have managed to screw up my email account twice in the last 10 days. The last time was Monday, the very last reason they should give is it was shut off due to inactivity. The jerk on the chat line didn't even have a fscking clue as to what happened but it wasn't just my account.

Just for the record, we are completely on shore :D Although, some of the calls I overhear in the call center with customers make you wonder about their competency sometimes

Then there is that, which is why it is so dammed hard for me to get to a real tech and have to go through nine layers of script kiddies.

The problem is people are human and some just don't give a chit. I've overheard convos in our Payment Center where a customer will come in and say they spoke with customer service and they told them this and that...which was bad info BUT some of that you need to take with a grain of salt too cuz believe it or not customers lie...yes, it's true AND they ARE NOT always right  :rofl: :rofl:

I think that some not giving a chit is spot on. But hell, stay out of CSR jobs if that is your attitude. Customers have always come in many versions but if they have followed the "rules" don't give them a hard time.
