I was over chatting with my part time neighbors wife about various things. Then she showed me a picture of what appears to be a pin oak or possibly chestnut oak that had been felled and laid off to the side of a piece of property a house will be built on. This thing looks to be at least 50 feet in length and her husband said it measured something like 38 inches across the base of the tree. Plus it has very few knots! A bit later her husband came home and we got to talking about the log. And, I volunteered to help buck it up and whatever it takes to get it split into firewood. He has one of those hydraulic splitters but getting the rounds to the splitter might be an issue. (at least he thinks so) He will also be running his saw, a Husqvarna. He's in his mid to upper 70's with his main home near Martinsville VA. That's near where all of this will take place, so I get to ride my bike there, use my saw, and maybe even my axe. Plus I might even get a free lunch out of it. I'll bring my MS361 with a 24 and 20 inch bar and chains, a gallon of bar oil, and a gallon of mix plus enough to make another gallon. Plus a hatchet, splitting axe (just because) and some wedges. He said he would let me know when! (I can't wait) :stacke:

I think Kimberly lives in the general vicinity of Martinsville.... Please be careful, 'cos you'll have to ride back home!
Reminds me of this ad I saw the other day. It's in the Cleveland area so the trip might take a while, but I suspect the log will wait for you. Free fire wood (Lorain) © craigslist - Map data © OpenStreetMap (google map) safety tips prohibited items product recalls avoiding scams Large season tree for firewood. Free. Might need a grane or a large chainsaw to cut down to haul away.
Sounds like you have your work cut out for you. Nothing like getting 40+ splits out of a single round with lots of nice rectangular 4x6's. Moving the rounds might not be as bad as you think. They will be reasonably easy to roll so long as the ground is smooth and gravity is in your favor. Game over if its uphill or rough ground. Another tool you might want to have is a peavey or cant hook, you are going to need one of you want to roll the log. And I hope his splitter is a vertical one. You'll also want a piece of pipe to act as a roller under the rounds when you split them. It will make your job about 10x easier.
I'd have to go vertical splittah on that one-you're welcome Backwoods Savage , A man has to realize his limits you know?
I'm about 95% sure I'll take the bike. You do know I'm talking about a motorcycle right? (my little bike)
The fuel, oil, wedges, hatchet, 20" bar and extra chains should fit in the saddlebags. The axe and saw would be on the back where a passenger would sit.
Oh yeah, I was fully aware you have a big touring bike. Still, a saw on the rack will be a nice pic. You'll get a few looks on your journey.
I think she lives south of Martinsville. Where I'll be at is about 10 miles NE of Martinsville. I'll be careful! I don't want my part time neighbor hurt, and I sure don't want to get hurt myself!
I would be all over that if I was their neighbor if only to have bragging rights to having cut up that beast, not to mention to amount of firewood that would be. But for now that's way to far for me to travel for firewood.
On my bike? Actually, all of the wood will be my part time neighbors. He lives either next door or nearby full time where I'll be helping with the work. He only lives by me on weekends except during the winter months. I'm just volunteering to help buck it up and get it split. Maybe stacking, but I'm not sure how he wants to proceed on that part. Basically, he's my boss for the day. Even if I had a hitch on my bike, which I don't, there is no way I could haul even a third of a cord on a trailer. I'd be needing a much larger bike!
Well, I'm not sure of the terrain, but I do have experience moving large rounds. I did a Poplar that way a couple years back that was something like 45 inches across. The neighbor does have a Can'tHook and I'll bring along a rope or strap of some kind in case the rounds are too big for it. His splitter is a vertical one, and I really like the idea of the pipe.
Probably not as bad as when I was hauling an upright vacuum on the back! Or a lawn mower, or 10' 2x4's, and 10' lengths of 2" pvc pipe. OR wearing a dress and heels. Boy did I ever get the looks! (almost as bad as when my top came unfastened. it really got kind of breezy) I like the idea of getting pictures with the saw (and axe) fastened to the bike. I'll have to take several and post at least one.
