High of 45 today and then it's dropping for a while. Looks like highs under freezing for the 10 days following. I think I am going to let the nc30 go out and cool down today. Going to disconnect it and hook up the old Defiant and see how much different the performance is. The 30 has been able to keep 67 in the hot spot of the first floor during most of the year. The 2 week cold snap in early Jan was too much though. Had to run the baseboard to keep up. I have wanted to see how well the Defiant would heat the place for a while now, so I am intrigued to get it installed again.
Starting tonight, the temp with the wind chill will be -28, all day Tuesday it's supposed to be -29 an on Tuesday night -27. Just like when we had the last cold stretch, we turn the pellet stove on around 6 or 7 at night with the Liberty running in the other corner. I'll be covering some wood (Beech & Sugar Maple) that we planned on burning next year, just incase.
They are calling for a high temperature today of 11 degrees. Present temperature is 16 degrees. -6 tonight.
I have to laugh at the news reports, they say "Another arctic blast of cold air " Like its a strange event LOL It's called "winter". 41° here, 20 mph winds
Is it just me Dave or have you been gettin' off easy up there this season? Doesn't seem to have been as cold for you as it has in years past.....
Above average temps now, but we usually get a January thaw. We'll see what the weather is after this warm spell. Probably go to -30°, but I hope not. Jet stream is more northerly this year than in past years. But we have had winters with no below zero days. Not sure what "Normal" is. Average low temp for Jan is +7°f, avg high is 23° 41° now, so we're well above the average.
Might be normal for you folks up there but single digits and negative temps are pretty freakin cold for us central atlantic sissies haha. I know it's winter and i actually like colder weather better than the heat but this winter has been crazy cold. Now they're callin for 6-12" through tomorrow night with some localized areas 8-16". The snow don't really bother me, it's the 35mph wind coming with it that does . Gonna be a looooong night tomorrow in the the plow truck
Seems as though it's been colder than "usual/normal" for the past several weeks. It's here again. DV heater will be fired up shortly to help keep the back of the house a little warmer overnight.

Yea I grew up in SW PA, I remember winter being cold & lots of snow. not many below zero days back then but seemed to get a few sub zero days every year. But nothing compared to here , although this 30s & 40° stuff we have now, I could get to like if it didn't rain. I think Hawaii has the best year round temperature averages
The weather here hasn't been "normal" for the last year or so it seems like. Very late spring, snowed a few days before Memorial Day even, and then out of the blue...boom... 80*... and summer was HOT (well for here). I'm not sure if it broke records, but it was probably close if not. Was hot enough I was tempted to strip down just to undies and chaps while cutting wood Then fall kind of hung around for quite some time. Usually around Halloween we have snow, but this year it was mid November. One of those deals was in the 30s and nice, wake up the next day and BOOM snow. Few days later it was -20*. Winter has been weird as well. Almost one extreme to the other as far as temps. One week it will be -20, and the next it's 40*. Also seems that went the lesser 48 is a solid chunk of ice, we are out in t shirts. Couple weeks ago it was -46* at my folks in Maine. Was almost 80* warmer here. (mid 30s) I do know as the years go on I get less and less excited about winter.
Well, I got her up and running the day of the op. Turned the thermostat down to 65 on the boiler. Has been comfortable ever since. Today the temp is 1 degree. Thermostat read 70 after I reloaded. I have to say that all the talk of clean burning and wood savings that lead me to the 30 have been mostly unfounded. This stove burns as clean as the 30. I do run the baffle to reburn. I have seen 7 hour refills where there were still some coals. The stove was still nice and toasty at 7 hours too. She ran dead center in the "correct burn" range on the stove top thermometer most of the afternoon, so I am not pushing the limits. I don't always have good timing, let alone great, but I seem to have hit the nail on the head getting this stove installed based on this nasty weather. I will prove the install later with some pics.
The Defiant did have a re-burn system which I see you're utilizing so it's not just a smoke dragon from yesteryear. I had one growing up in a large center hall colonial with newspapers for insulation. It was a heating beast for sure. The downside is the need for periodic rebuilds and the cracking issues with the relatively fragile internals. The 30 will prove to be pretty much maintenance free other than gaskets which do not require disassembling the stove to replace. Really wish I could have snagged the old Defiant before Dad moved out but where the hell would I put it? I couldn't even think about installing it in this place, we'd be boiling water on the windowsills.
There she is. If you look close, you can see the big potholder in the background, also known as the 30nc. The stove eats more, but puts out more. I would guess there is little difference between the log input and btu output of the two stoves.
