I see that the Super Bowl is to be played in 2 weeks. Until two weeks ago, we had not turned our television on since the Super Bowl in February 2013. But we watched a couple of playoff games plus one yesterday and part of the second one.

But now we're thinking that if we got a new tv, my wife could watch some of the nature shows that she really loves. But what tv? For the entertainment center we currently have a new one could not be more than 27" wide so that would limit us a bit.

Any suggestions on what would be best?

I was amazed at the clarity of the new TV's.
Having a High Definition signal to a new TV,
I can see the blades of grass on the football field :)

Most use less power too, so more energy efficient.

I'm hoping so Dave. We still have the old tv with a vcr built in for recording. That means we have the little box that is supposed to make our picture better after the tv stations all changed but we found instead that the picture sucks as many times it lags behind and the picture is crap.

Picture quality will be an amazing difference. ;)

You might need to get a Blue ray DVD player if you want to watch the new movies .
Don't think you can record with DVD player.

Difficult to keep up with Technology

The purpose of that box is to convert digital to analog which your old TV requires.. This will not enhance the picture or sound.. If you get a HDTV and want a great picture you will need the HD channels (more $$ but worth it in my opinion) or you may be disappointed..

What size screen are you looking for? To be honest I wouldn't go to far overboard as any new LCD or Led capable of 720P is going to give you a real nice picture. Both of my 32" TVs are Vizio 's and I didn't pay over $300 for either of them including shipping. Of the two of them I like the Led tv the best. Bought one off of tigerdirect.com and one off of Woot.

I will also add that the new TV's are all widescreen so you may want to get a new spot for the TV as only a tiny one will fit and they cost as much as a much larger TV..

And didn't I just read a couple days ago that Blue Ray and DVD will be things of the past in the not too distant future?

Right Ray. We know what it is and we also know what is available here. No cable for sure so we're stuck with what is on locally. No, we are not going to put in a satellite as I doubt we'd get our money's worth out of that.

Will have to connect online or cell phone signal & down load movies soon.
No more 1 ounce DVDs wrapped in unbreakable , 1/2 a pounds of plastic. Save on some trash.

A big sun spot CME will eventually shut down all communications.
    When is the big question.

Our local and pbs are all in. HD, if you have A good internet connection, you can connect your computer and from there the world is wide open to movies. Something like netflix or Hulu will get nearly unlimited choice of tv or movies. No contract or commitments. If you can, take your wife and visit some stores. Shop around. Our friend, SmokeyTheBear just cut his ties to cable tv, yet he has multiple viewing options. You might PM him. He has a lot of insight with this situation.

Wasn't there a link at the other site for over the air channels where you put your location and it gave you the possible channels that you could get.

We have a regular antenna here with a new flat screen with a built in digital converter. Nothing fancy, but the picture is great. We have Netflix and get enough local stations to see what is important. We also have a HDMI cable to the computer for watching youtube videos if we want. there are a lot of PBS shows on youtube to watch.

One thing is for sure, if I had cable I would just not get things done around here. Prices on flat screens are very reasonable and very light in weight.

Dennis Best Buy and Walmart have good deals on TVs most of the time as well. The Vizio brand is good at Walmart and Best Buy carries almost everybody around us.

We have three Visio sets, and one Sony. The Visio is my preferred set to watch.

Start looking now but dont buy yet.
Typically the best times a year to buy a tv are black Friday and right before the super bowl.
This is usually when you will get the most bang for your buck.
    Sales should be advertised soon.
