Decided to take 1 of my dogs for a walk to the "adult" beverage store about 3/4 mile away less than an hour ago. About 2 blocks into this adventure, I hear the sound of cracking wood and a large crash around the corner in another direction that I was walking. I was thinking, that a tree fell, and I may get a close to home scrounge.

Anyhow, I round the corner toward the sound, and something doesn't look right as I travel this street quite often. The closer I get, I can see this............

The closer I get, I can see someone lying behind the ladder. Put my dog on a sit stay, and run over to him. His right leg is obviously broken and pinned by the branch in the "crotch" of the bent extension ladder. The fellows Mother is on the deck screaming, and I yell for her to call 911. I then try to lift/roll this large branch enough so he can drag himself out. That wasn't happening. The branch is about 12" in diameter at least and full of sap now...................I couldn't budge it.

His Mother gets ahold of 911 and I'm relaying/yelling to her what I see that's happening with her son. I yell for her to grab a few blankets..................it's cold out and incase he's goes into shock if there's bleeding that I cannot see. She get them while still on the phone with the 911 operator; and I cover him up and roll one up to put under his head. I'm talking to him and grabbing his shoulder to keep him conscious while the paramedics are in route. He probably fell 7-8 feet, and the branch sheared the wrung off the ladder that he was standing on and pinned his ankle/leg under it. He could've had a concussion, broken ribs, broken spine in addition for all I knew.

Paramedics and police sirens get closer so I go back to my dog, who is still on a sit/stay:cool:, and stand in the street to flag down the paramedics/police............still talking with the guy to stay awake and talk to me.

The paramedics do there thing, I ask the policeman if he's needs a statement from me...........he says NO; so I resume my walk to the "adult" beverage store.

Wow, good thinking, you did the right thing. Was he using a chain saw or hand saw?

    A couple more pix.......

That's the "barber chair" he created by attempting to cut this big branch down with a back cut, no notch, and standing on a ladder.

OH, and by the way...................see the cut off stumps in the background of this picture????? That's my doing, as I've gotten a couple big box elder scrounges from this place in the past. This tree her son was cutting on is a very large multi-trunked silver maple.

Lucky for him you had your thirst on! Nice work helping him out MightyWhitey! Hope he recovers well and that he learned a little something from the escapade. You just can't be too safe, and he was surely not doin it right. I bet you'll be cutting all the trees around there from now on.

Actually; he's looked about my age (50ish), based on his Mothers appearance to me. His Mother said to the paramedics and popo, that he's on "parole" also, as the paramedics found an "ankle bracelet" on him when they freed him and cut his boot and sock off!!!

Jeez! No safeties in place anywhere! Probably was cutting one handed and balancing with the other! No undercut of any kind! (4" and under a kerf undercut is fine, over 4" a notch is necessary) He's lucky to come away with his life.

Gooder on you MightyWhitey for thinking fast and going to the rescue.

(kind of hard to "like" a post where someone was hurt)

I didn't know what happened prior to hearing the cracking wood and the big branch hitting the ground. I was a good 1.5 blocks (my neighborhood blocks) away when this happened. I was gonna be asking for scrounge wood based on what I heard.............when I altered my thirst cravings!!!

That would've been the "modern", "hey look at ME" attitude that most of the YUTES have nowadays. I'm totally happy to go thru life anonymously.

It is all very bad to have happened. Good that you were there and able to help. Also very impressed that you dog friend is so well behaved and that you take him for walks.
