I have not been keeping up with the wood pile this spring so I borrowed a splitter from my buddy. The weather has been crappy this week but I managed to get some done. They are calling for more snow this weekend but I am going to try to finish the pile up. I thought I was going to save so much wood this winter but it is just dragging out and I am over 3 cord already. So not a lot of surplus. I better get to work!!!
Kyle, you forgot to stand that splitter up! You had to lift a lot of logs before splitting them. Standing the splitter up means no lifting of the logs. Just roll them on!
BS..I know you love vertical. So does my father. I use it that way for the big stuff but I prefer horizontal for the medium and small stuff. I can move the splits easier off the splitter when standing and I also feel safer horizontally. But just for you I will do it vertical this weekend but I do not have a milk crate. I will keep you updated on my progress.
Yeah you can use a splitter after looking at the rounds in that pile, be sure to thank your friend and post more pics as progress is made.
I had time for about 30 rounds yesterday, all vertical with a bucket. Those rounds you see are really nasty box elder. They all have extremely twisted grain and are tough splitting. The only good thing about them is I do not have to make separate kindling for a few years. They go in that trash can and then dumped into a 4x4x4 box in my enclosed porch. The friend that loaned the splitter to me is one of the best men I know. I am grateful to know him. Trying to get splitting soon but wife is getting some shut eye and 14 month old is crazy!!!
We are installing a wood stove in his garage this summer. He will be a wood burner next winter! I will extend an invitation when I bring the splitter back.
Nice work but somethings wrong with that splitter...you're too young to not benefit from the work-out...milk crates are for milk, cleaning supplies in the garage and to keep kindling in-use the splitter as intended-go horizontal!..Seriously, nice looking work-soon as it dries up around here, I'm back at it-I CSS 30 truckloads last year, just burned 2 cord this winter so I have 7 standing, and I burn normally 3-3.5 a yr---plan to be on the 4 yr plan by summer's end...
I got to put 2 more tanks through the splitter today. We will see how it stacks up but I'm guessing about 2 cords so far. I also started a new row on the fence line so I can rotate stacking areas for different years. I will start stacking as soon as these rounds are split.
