I was in NYC this weekend, on the West Side near the old docks. The NYPD uses one of the docks as an impound yard. Illegally parked cars and other law breakers end up being towed there. Most of the cars are in the building on the dock but the "special" ones are out front. I took a picture of this weekend's special catch: Only in New York. KaptJaq
Not everybody in NYC that has a nice car is a drug dealer. There are pimps, lawyers, and bankers that have tons of questionable cash too... Eventually. Parking violations, pay the fine and impound fee plus prove you own it and you get it back. If it is impounded due to illegal activity the judge decides who gets it. Could be the victim, or anybody that was hurt by the crime. It could also be used towards any fines. If nobody claims it, they do a search in case it was "borrowed". If they can't find the owner the city auctions it. The auctions are big business in the city. KaptJaq
when i lived on LI, Strong Island, in the 80's i did some repos with a friend, kinda cool at the time, pretty stupid career looking back.
we did winch a car out of the bay of off Babylon once for the Suffolk County PD and there was a body in the trunk, it was in there about 2 weeks, that was a pleasant sight. The friend has been shot, attacked by dogs,, people with bats, you name it.
Its been a while but I've been to that impound pier many a time to pick up UPS delivery vans and take them back to their driver and help for a while to get him caught up. They used to file the tickets by make of the car in an open set of cubbies on the wall. Since they towed so many UPS and Fedex trucks they each had their own cubby.
Was there a lot 2007-2009. Hated every minute of it. Couldn't sleep. Always looking over my shoulder. Whenever I got on the plane to come home my ears would ring for hours after leaving. Made some friends from there that visited here and caused a lot of trouble. NYC lifestyle and mentality DOES NOT MIX with Northern New West Virginia mentality. There is a lot to be said about that phrase,,, "only in NYC" !
