Takes awhile for them to become edumacated - I know I have 2 sons - I am 6'1" and have to look up to both of them ( litteraly). Now that they have family responsibilities of there own and have been out in the real world for awhile ( one just over 30 other just shy) - the old man wasn't such a gruff old xyz as they thought. I run a repair clinic via cell phone now. Neither one is a slouch in the education department just the things that pass for schooling now nor the pastimes are not the same as when we grew up.

 

Yes, things are different, but are we better for it? I must be an old fogey at 38 because the drastic change in values has me shaken. "Back in my day" really wasn't too long ago for me. I suppose a kid could be considered smarter for knowing how to program a computer or run a network over a kid who can catch and prepare their own supper or get the push mower running again, but not in my eyes. I don't hate technology. I embrace a great deal of it. I just don't want to become too dependent on it, which is what I see in the youngins coming up. Is it better to see a picture of and read about a bullfrog, or to go out and catch one in the crik? Information is power but is nothing without experience.

My nephew may yet surprise me. He does have some hobbies that he doesn't need facebook for.

 

I can do all those things. Pretty easy...hard part is seeing the value in them and wanting to learn how to do it. I'm still fairly young at 34....so age doesn't have a lot to do with it in my eyes. People just need to raise their kids to take pride in everything they do...from fixing a toilet on up.

 

You Sir, are the well rounded individual that I hope my younger family members become. Again, nothing wrong with being a techie, but using technology shouldn't be a person's only only skills. Self reliance is a big theme in my life. That means I need to know how to clean a carburetor but also trade stocks online. You were born in the eighties, so not really any worries there. It was still OK to go outside unsupervised and find out who you are, rather than having someone guide you every second of the way. I feel blessed to be born in the time I was. Old enough to know life without technology, but young enough to be able to utilize it. Take the phones and ipads and computers away from the younger ones and most wouldn't know what to do.

 

Some women want a "project" but at that age there is no fixing it.

 

My 2.8 year old grandson will learn everything I can teach him before I die. And he gets all my money if he succeeds in life.

 

You are even closer to the end of Gen x than I am. I embrace tech. But I also embrace old school get your hands dirty work too.

That's what separates gen x'ers from gen y, and quite frankly from all other generations.

Then again many bearings are now sealed for life and can't be lubed.

They call them maintenance free.
I call it planned obsolescence.

 

And they are, until they burn up on the highway and need replaced. At which point you better know how to work on a trailer bearing.

But they last longer. I know how to pack bearings, but I'll take the sealed ones any day.

 

I was blessed to be a child of the 60's nobody's parents knew where the hell any of their kids were. But we came home around dark with adventures that we could never tell our parents about, but we could tell our uncles. No urban vandalism or anything like that. Just kids in the woods doing kids things, Ok, we may "borrowed" some lumber from the local lumber yards in midnight raids, for the forts we have, or may not have built from the local lumber yard. I'm hoping the statute of limitations is in force here. I deny everything.

 

The girls over to the U Maine lumberjack team would put these "boys" to shame.

I have never had this happen. I know my Dad did once, and was unable to fix it by the side of the road, as it was fused to the axle. So once that I know of in two generations ... I think my son will be OK if he can't do that one.

 

I can't disagree with that in most cases. Now a trailer bearing is where you want a zerk, and bearing buddies to pump out water on boat trailers.

Ski-doo tried sealed bearings on crank bearings on 600 and 800 etec 2 stroke sled motors. They thought that would be better than having the injection oil lube the bearings. That was deemed to not be a great idea. Far too many crank bearing failures.

 

It happens if you trailer enough. Than again bearing buddies and regular lubing, as well as oil bath type bearings have made this less of an issue. I carry a spare bearing and a kit to replace it if necessary.

 

I've got about 40,000 miles on my snowmobile trailer. They need some occasional maintenance.

 

Wow you thirty something guys are really making me feel old. I can remember when a Push Mower was a Push Mower lol.
