The other side of the coin to the thread wildwest has posted.

Anyones parents have a totally uncool car when they were young?

I bring mention of the Toyota Tercel 4 wheel drive station wagon. If there was anything less cool, I haven't heard about it yet!

But truth be told, they drove it for quite a few years, until it started rusting out a bit, and pulling in dust. They parked it, and eventually I did a redneck fix on the dust problem. I then drove it for a few years! It's one saving grace was 4 wheel drive, and an extra low gear while 4 wheel drive was engaged.

Great during slippery winter weather, and surprising good at going into snowy fields or minor offroading.

Identical to this one, two-tone white & green... Spare tire mounted on the bumper.

The front seat laid down flat and interlocked with the back seat to make a double bed for those long cross-country trips. Don't understand why they got rid of it before I could drive?

My parent's bought one if these new in 93 except it was maroon:

A 4 banger Plymouth Voyager, and there was 5 of us kids crammed in there! Once I got my license I was allowed to drive it, so of course I saved up as quickly as I could and bought something else ASAP! I think it finally died around 170k miles, but it took a LOT of work to keep it going even that long. My dad swore off Chrysler products forever after owning that minivan.

Here's another one, a 1987 Subaru GL coupe that looked dead on the one below. My uncle bought it new, and then sold it to my dad when dad's Dodge Colt car got rear-ended. Dad hated it though because it only got 18mpg and eventually just parked it in our barn when he bought a Civic.

When I was 14 or so I cleaned all the mouse nests out of it one day and when my parents would leave the house I started taking the battery out of the tractor and put it in the Subaru and would joy-ride around our property, which was about 80 acres combined with our neighbor. It was a 5 speed and I taught myself to drive a stick with it. The car was turbo'd, and a 4x4 with a transfer case (4x4 high and 4x4 low), so it was a blast to drive around the fields and river bottoms.

One weekend when I was 16 (but before I had my driver's license) I had some friends over who had their license and we were all dirt track racing our cars around the bean field in the mud. Having 4WD I was passing everyone, but got a little cocky and lost control around a muddy corner and ran into the woods. I took out about 5-6 saplings before a large tree finally stopped me. We pushed the car out of the woods into the field to assess the damage (cracked radiator and folded bumper) just in time to so my parents walking down into the bottom field to see what all the noise was from!! They called all my friends parents, everyone got grounded and I wasn't allowed to get my driver's license until a few months before my 18th birthday!

My parent's did eventually give the Subaru to me and I fixed it up and sold it for $500. Looking back I wish I'd have kept it, that would have been a great car to just keep around as a beater. It had impressive power when the turbo kicked in and it would have been a lot of fun having the only car that could make it to the back-woods bonfires going on every weekend.

This one was my mistake, late 80's Pontiac Lemans, 4dr manual transmission. I went from an 81' Mercury Capri with big seats, heavy body, and pretty fast despite being a 4 banger, to a plastic Korean car that was expensive to repair and had tiny seats. This was also my first front wheel drive car. Ever. :picard:I kept for almost a year. Sold it and and ended up in an 82' Supra (WOW was that a fun car).

and make faces at the stop lights to the drivers behind you:rofl:
We had an 80's Caprice version of the vinyl woody.
That fit 6 kids snuggly and when 7th came along folks upgraded to a Ford van maroon/gray - that thing was lemon, so my dad traded on a special order Ford 15 passenger E-350 one 3rd row deleted.
You could put a pallet in the back and comfortably fit the final 8th kid with ease.
I drove the big van a bit when I got my license - filling those dual tanks even back when gas was under $1 was painful.

I think you are really cool if you drive a car that's totally uncool because you just don't care. (Says the guy who drives a 98 RAV4)

My mom loved her Buick Riviera, and it was really a very reliable car......

Does that one belong in the "cool" cars instead of the UN-cool cars? I think that is a cool car......

You go ahead and post it over there...... I kinda thought it was an alright looking car, but the ribbing I took about its Pimp status really rubbed me the wrong way in the mid '80's...... My dad was a police officer then, and I KNOW he didn't appreciate it.....

Dad bought the same van for the construction company to shuttle the guys into Penn State because parking is horrendous. We met outside of town and drove it about 10 miles a day. I think we filled it with gas 2 times per week...:jaw:
