Yes, we all answer to a Higher Power. Now you have to do your part and REALLY try to be careful. I respect you for being active, and defeating being debilitated. Also glad you a getting off the pain medication. Evil stuff that it can be.
You have to be stubborn and determined sometimes to win. Do want you want, but take your time. Sometimes we take for granted simple things like turning around. Be happy Dennis.

I will echo others sentiment about having great news after a long struggle with health issues. Stay well.

A little off topic but Dennis I was wondering what your wood splitting technique is?

I injured my back last year, not horrendously. Bad enough to be a wake up call at 30 years old, not bad enough to where the gamble of surgery possibly making it worse would be worth the chance of improvement. L4/L5 & L5/S1 pain comes and goes. Modified my bucking technique and work smarter not harder letting the equipment horse the logs out of the pucker brush. Splitting still kills me though, I'm buying a power splitter this summer. But my back aches just thinking about horsing those large rounds up onto the horizontal beam.

Very glad to hear that you are feeling so much better and healing well! I've had a bout of sciatica - I'm sure nothing like your back problem pain, but it gave me an idea of what it means to have a problem with your back and it is terrible. Wishing you the best and to have even better improvements!! Praying for you! Cheers!

Right on Larry. And yes, the pain medicine can be evil stuff but sometimes it is necessary to give some temporary relief. I still recall after falling off the trailer I had to practically beg the doctor for some really strong stuff. Then we got some and my even my wife was so happy the next day to see me get some relief she called the doctor to thank him. Today, we saw that doctor as I had a scheduled check-up with him. Needless to say, he was one very happy man to see how freely I was moving today and to report no pain. Actually, we saw several people and it really surprised me how almost all of them commented how much better I looked and acted and how much more freely I was moving. I guess it shows! Sure feels good.

Yup, just look at my avatar. This is how I split wood. I used to split by hand before the injury back in the 80's but now it is almost all with the hydraulics. Only occasionally will I take a swing at a log now.

Also, looking at your post Dan, you stated, "But my back aches just thinking about horsing those large rounds up onto the horizontal beam." Notice in the pictures that I do not lift the logs onto the beam. I split the way God intended wood to be split; VERTICALLY!

I simply can see no sense in lifting every log up onto the splitter. I also can't see standing while doing this work as it has always bothered me to stand in one place. I can work much better and longer if I can sit.

However, I will state that it does depend a lot on the height of the chair or whatever your are sitting on. Too high and it will hurt the back. Too high and if you have to lift a heavy piece just a little, it is harder work. Sitting as I do if I have to lift, I can simply place my elbows on my thighs and then we have simple leverage which is much better than using heavy muscle and taking a chance of pulling a muscle or even just making them sore.

I don't remember how heavy those logs were in the picture but I'm guessing perhaps 60-70 lbs minimum. I rolled them onto the splitter. The only lifting was to throw the splits onto the pile.

I know this isn't the iconic milk crate, however, it does look a nice thing to sit on when working outside when you don't need to walk but when turning and moving a little bit is helpful.

That does look nice and in theory it might work but I can tell it would be way too high. This would cause you to have to bend way too much and it would definitely be hard on the back.

A few years ago after having hip surgery, I could not bend the hip or leg much but had some wood I wanted to split. I have a small step stool in the barn that is similar to the one pictured and I used it. It did work but I'd never use it again for splitting as it is just too high and makes the work harder. This is why I like to stress the height of the stool or whatever you use to sit on. For me, a milk crate is about ideal height even though it is low. That low is a big help to the body.
