This was much needed after a stressful day at work. I came home today to find the rest of my maple windfall has finally come down.

Lucky for it, too. My friend who runs a tree biz just stopped over yesterday to take a look at another red maple in the back yard that he's gonna take down for me. I showed him this mess and he offered to climb it, but I told him it wasn't worth even the slightest risk to me because it wasn't threatening anything and I certainly won't need it anytime soon.

This is quickly turning into the year of the red maple. But don't worry - its still a little wet back there, and I've got a weekend or two worth of work left on the walnut at my sisters. You all still have a couple weeks to mentally prepare - for the return of Shawn "The Machine". :saw::axe::stacke::D

    Soon.

It was a pretty big double stem that appears to have caused it all - toppled about 5 other reds on its way down. It looks like the ants really chowed down on this one - the stump just disintegrated. It's kind of a wetlands spot and plus it didn't really freeze this year either.

You can generally count on gravity doing it's thing…… eventually. But dang that gravity when your hauling those logs in:eek:. That's a good bit of wood there, gonna wait till the standing water is gone?

I'm burning mostly Red Maple right now.
Really liking the stuff, once it's dry, which doesn't take very long.

I have a good bit of it that I noticed today to thin out around some nice oaks I want to promote, as I was cutting down Basswoods for the same reason. The basswood get's put in the swampy areas for "corduroy" roads.

Had something like that happen to me a couple of years ago. A big red oak came down that started a chain reaction of wood coming down. It took down a shagbark hickory , a few small elms and other oaks.

Took me a few months to clean it all up but slow steady work does the trick.

I had forgotten what summer (woods) looks like:eek:.
Your pic just boosted my enthusiasm on my current thinning efforts. I know dang well that dropping trees in a tight canopy is a pita any day, but with leaves on everything…… your pic was a good reminder.
