I've cleaned off the deck and it's time to reseal. The deck is green treated wood (pine) and is around 10 years old. I am looking for a semi translucent sealer/stain. I seem to try a different brand of sealer every time but I was wondering if anyone here had found a product that they were really impressed by and would buy again?
I have been using Thompson's and I'm less than impressed. I have to reseal my deck every 2 years. I'll be watching this thread.
Do NOT use Thompson's, worse stuff you can use. It is basically Paraffin that breaks down in the sunlight. Find a oil based stain like Sikkens or something similar, most of the stuff you buy at Big Box stores is not going to last very long. I used to sell a product made by Flood that was great Flood Stain | Wood Stains | Flood
This stuff is good. Beads water really well, easy cleanup and a good warranty. Speaking as a pro, all of these kinds of products only work as well as the prep you do, except thompsons..... junk. Great question.. I look for more of an oil or solvent based coating that soaks into the wood. Some are based on more more of a coating than a penitrating oil. Just my personal opinion... Cabot works well, go lighter than you think, because you cant go lighter once you go darker.
Subscribed Need to seal the decking on my tilt deck trailer. Needs to be something thats not slippy when the deck is up.
Agree, I have used several other brands only to have it a mess in two years. After some vigorous cleaning, I used the Olympic brand white stain with really good results. No blistering, bubbling up or premature wearing off. Just make sure you do a good prep according to the directions.
Interesting thread. I'm tearing down a 20 year old deck this spring and rebuilding it, this is one more thing to think about as I probably would have just slopped some Thompsons on top of it.
Light colored stain gets very dirty looking very quick on decking. It's fine for rails but steer clear of it for walking surfaces.
I have heard that products like Thompson's will crack and start to peel, making it ugly and hard to refinish any thoughts?
