Put up some Ash and Cherry today to go with the Elm from a few weeks back. Been looking forward to today all week. Spent the whole day in the woods and I'm tired. Elm on the right, Cherry in the middle, Ash on the left. Trying something new separating by species. Yes, I am a dork. Empty spot to the far left is for Oak. Gonna build our first backyard fire of the season tonight since it is so nice out. Gonna be another week or so till I can get out in the woods again, and I can't wait!

Beautiful stacks. I can sit and look at stacks for a long time, nice ones are a thing of beauty.

Frank, in your spare time you could come to our place and stack wood for us. We're not that neat!

Thanks Red Elm. I also love looking at stacks... much more than the actual process of stacking!!

Thanks Backwoods. I am trying to be more careful with this side of the shed. The first side was a learning process. It is way too crooked and I am worried it may tip over some day.

It's never enough, Spencer. If I could quit my job and cut firewood every day I would do it in a heartbeat.

Thanks Eric, but the last couple pictures are a little old. The stacks are leaning quite a bit more now. If you push anywhere on the stack, the entire thirty foot stack moves! It's kind of scary, actually. I have considered re-stacking it but the thought of that is a little overwhelming. I just tell the kids they are not allowed in there without me.

I hear ya.....could you consider stretching some kind of "roll" fencing across the face of the stacks, with intermittent strapping/tie-offs to secure these wiggly woods?

I could never stack wood like that, as much as I might try to. It looks like it was sliced like bread.

It's not nearly as straight as it looks in the pictures. There's about 8" difference between the top and bottom of the stack now. Stacking is my least favorite part of the wood hoarding process. This year I have started marking all cuts at 16"". Having all pieces the same length seems to help a little.

I use the more or less method. I've got a pretty good eye for 16" after all these years, and they're more or less 16.

Beautiful stacks Frank and Beans and I too like to separate stacks by species. It occurred innocently enough in that each half cord trip to the farm gets SS and placed in the shed, each row in a bay holds a half cord. You have compiled some nice wood that looks great and I'm sure burns better. How many cord do you have put up?

Thanks Ashwatcher. Not sure how many cords, never did the math to figure it out! I would really like to get the shed completely filled this spring, but there just doesn't seem to be enough time to devote to wood. If I could just put in a solid week of 10 hour days I would be all set. Who came up with the idea of going to work every day? --I've got plenty of work to do around here.

    Nice work!

I've always admired those guys who use a transit to help create such straight piles!

Thanks Yooperdave. It's easier to get straight stacks down here cuz the land is flatter!
