I got a few "Happy Birthday to Me" presents in the mail today, including the rest of the parts to make my extra set of Granberg thickness rails into a second mill. Well mostly... I forgot to get the end brackets to connect it all together. I really wanted to get both of them set up this weekend too because I want to start into the 4' walnut. So I had to make my own. Used some black locust I was saving for a special occasion. I'm not quite finished yet - I need a way to secure the handlebar or keep it from moving. I also plan to cut a rabbet into them where they contact the rails to bring them to identical thickness as the granberg model, so the scale lines up the same. But I think it's going to work great.
Nice....eeeerrrrm....Cur-rig? Love the thread title, bud Can't wait to see how your fine (quick-fix) engineering treats you. Stay safe, Shawn Curry "Logs slab themselves when they see him approaching with a saw!" That was a little ref to the thread "Most Interesting Miller goes to Mars".......
I made up the supports for the handlebar this morning. I considered cutting a dado for them but it might have been tricky to locate properly. I ended up just attaching them with screws. I didn't need to adjust the thickness at all - the scale was dead on. Got to take her for a test run this afternoon with the 60" bar. Worked flawlessly.
Looking good Shawnberg "doodlepants" Currian! If you end up with any end cuts that I could use for gun stocks, grips, handguards, misc accessories please save them!
Awesome work! Glad it came together and functioned for your as you wanted. That's gonna add up to some of the prettiest slabs WE'VE ever seen!
Shawn, Looks like you are getting a pretty nice smooth slice. It also looks like you're getting close to your max. width. Do you recall how much the rip chain cost? My saw shop is having an "open house" this Tuesday and there is suppose to be a guy there with a similar setup not sure which machine.
Ripping chain normally retails nearly double what they charge for regular chain. So I make my own. I buy a lot of my chain in 25' reels from loggerchain.com. Yeah turns I don't think I can use the small mill after all, so the dueling mills idea is out. Most of the cuts I plan to make are 32" and up. I was hoping to use the 60" bar sparingly too cause it takes a little while to sharpen that puppy. It will be worth it though.
I'm thoroughly impressed with your sawing...Heck I couldn't even saw that one on my big mill (60" circular thats not set up yet)... The capacity on that one will be probably in the 28"-29" diameter x 20' give or take. I have 48' of rail to go on it and IIRC, a 14' carriage.... Might be only a twelve foot carriage tho. Thanks for the pics !!!
