I was just answering your question, not complaining ;).

Actually, at my current place, it's because the price for taking the willow down would probably scare me more than the willow does. I'm guessing a second mortgage would need to be taken out and I'm already working 2 jobs, not wanting to take on a 3rd. Not like I have a nice place anyway (unless you are from the insurance company - then I have gotten all kinds of nice improvements done to the inside).

They make a nice screen / wind block , if deer are a big problem by you they will eat the chit out'a them , that's why I don't recommend them around here unless you put up deer netting to protect them .
Here's a link to some great info about them WindbreakTrees.com

I do understand about the cost. My son had a large willow on his property line. The tree was always dropping limbs. He had little ones running around the back yard and didn't feel safe. His neighbor also didn't like the tree and the mess, so they got together and hired a tree man to remove it. Cost them about $1100 to get the tree out. Now he has moved here but rents out that house. At least one less worry.

My new toy arrived, after a chowing session I'll install it and see if I can activate it.

The new unit has been up and it swallowed all of my music mp3s, videos, and photographs. There are still a few gremlins that will be cleared up once I talk the advanced support team at TWC. Will do that when I'm more awake. Been a long day.

My orchard has two perimeter fences 8 foot tall. My Great Pyrenees had just passed away last March, had kept the property deer free for 11 years. One managed to penetrate the orchard fencing last May. The neighbor saw it at 5:30PM munching down the leaves on an apple tree. So the next night I stood on the fence line and waited. Sure enough the oversized varmint slowly worked his way up the hedgerow. When he got in range I let loose a "Bird Banger" it went off right over his head.....haven't seen any of them around since last May.

Now having said that, last hunting season NYS ECON deemed that the deer population was too low and didn't issue any doe permits last year. That combined with this very mild winter will undoubtedly bring potential pressure on the trees. I missed collecting one in the grille of the truck, just two days ago, and just by inches. It had fallen down trying to avoid my imitation of a F1 car in a pit stop... phew, it was close!

Hey smoke, I always try to keep things simple because I'm stupid. I can't help it if simple for me might not be so for others. I would have been canned if any of the stuff I worked on worked (?) the way a lot of today's software stuffed consumer electronics do. :heidi: is mild compared to what more than one of my bosses would have done.

We use the same device for scaring blue herons from a club fly fishing pond. If they don't get the hint this year, a different pistol may be used.

    Yup

There are many newer neighborhoods here that they clear out timbered areas then build new homes among the tall trees left.

The wind howls and the sparsely scattered tall timber falls over and squashes the houses
    And they wonder why ????

Back in October of 1962 we had the "Perfect storm" and winds here at the ranch were gusting to 120- 130 MPH and it just really fouled things up.

We were out of power for nearly a month.

Luckily it was early October and the weather was not too cold.
We heated with the fire place and cooked on the Coleman stove.

Took a long time to clean up that mess.

The device was provided by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture in Concord, NH. It is specifically designed to not require any ATF permits. Basically, a glorified bottle rocket and sort of works but blue herons are difficult to scare off because they remember where the fish are. Plan B, also under the guidance of the USDA and National Wildlife Service, is a more permanent solution but we're hoping they'll just go somewhere else.

Wasn't questioning Plan a, just Plan B - you are way ahead of me, but some people are unaware of the restrictions and would hate for you to run afoul of the law if you didn't know.
