Thanks for the oiler tip, I'll definitely try that.

As for cleaning, it was a general "blow all the crap off so when it comes apart there's no crap to fall in the saw" kind of cleaning. I didn't remove the air filter housing even. I wanted to get my running condition problems noted before taking the carb off. As I said, I think dad cleaned it and forgot, because it did the idle fine and bog out/stall after he did the trench work. Now it just seems to me, to need a touch more fuel.

I didn't pull the fuel filter, that was going to be a swap out later thing. I'll swish out the oil tank with some diesel as well, who knows what might be in there.

On a saw that new, "generally" it is just a fleck of dirt getting into an orifice, blocking/restricting. At least from my experience. Another tip is to take it apart in a shallow plastic tub. Let's you see any dirt and keeps the parts wrangled. Make sure to ask your dad if he fiddled with the screw as it may not be the correct position for a clean, stock location.

Oh jeez, he's getting up there and not so good a memory. Very sharp, but forgetful. I have a video of it running that's going to youtube. It's a lousy phone video, but as long as a guy closes his eyes and listens, it's good for that. Think it's idling too fast as well.

Here's the saw idling, with a few blips of the throttle.

give a very good cleaning to the saw and to the carb , maybe the saw have problem but maybe a small piece of dust make the problem , after the good cleaning play little with the tuning screw if the problem continue , then start the leaks tests, coils test, etc etc
    so simple

Be sure to drain the oil tank and flush it out as well. I'm always amazed how much dust finds it way in there and I even keep a paint brush to wipe it off before filling. That too is a good thing to have in your work bucket when sawing.

    My sorry
do you clean the saw and carb ? No
do you clean the filters or try new ones ? No
do you take of the mufler to see the piston ? No
do change a spark plug and see if the coil or wires are ok ? No
do you make leaks test to the saw ? No
do you read the service manual for problems and solutions ? No

so after of two pages of thread and 27 posts of members recomendations and helps you dont have do nothing and the only thing that you give us is a video that we see a saw iddling more fast but not bogging and not die as you tell in the first post.
you have the saw in front of you , and until now you dont take out not even the fuel filter

Go to the dealer its 60 dollars per hour for the work plus the parts that he sure put on even if dont need
    END OF STORY

There was some cooties in the oil tank that came out in the flush, but I won't know if it mattered or not until I go spin the sprocket with the air compressor.

Saws , at least stihl no longer sling it off bar. Well the fine mist trick at wot they should do. And blue marks can be from dull chains being used.

If the bar won't sling the mist of at like concrete at WOt there is a problem

I tried Kevin's trick blowing the sprocket back n forth with the air comp, and it must have worked for the most part. I can't tell if it was misting (don't think so) but it was oiling the chain, albeit quite stingy in my mind.

In any event, the saw is good enough for light tree trimming, which is usually what it's used for, not roots in trenches. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?:)

IIRC the oilers on the 017/018 & 170/180 were notoriously stingy.

Is the oil passage in the bar open?

Bar was cleaned off/out and oil is getting there, just very stingy. That's also when I noticed the strange blue discolorations inside the channel where the chain rides.

I'm not sure it takes a lot of oil to keep a chain and bar lubed like guys on these forums think. If the chain and bar quiet I would not worry about it. He probably got the bar hot cutting roots.

Yea husky oil more . Old ones from like 15 years ago in both brands oil crazy. But modern huskies oil more than stihl I have found.

I guarantee you its hot and blued from dull cutters cutting in the dirt!
