I own a Gerber Multi tool that I find very handy. I was givin this older model Leatherman Supertool. I opened it up and don't even see how it closes. Got any ideas? There are no buttons to push, nothing to slide.
Have to be smarter than the tool I guess. There is basically a piece of the metal frame that clicks into a slot in each piece of the tool. But I see no way to disengage it.
The Gerber on the other hand has these simple little black slides that lock and unlock the tools. The Leatherman Supertool is "quite" a bit older.
Thank you. I found that just a few minutes ago! LOL So the way it works is you have to open another tool in order to release the one you have locked open. I am in the process of cleaning this thing between each tool. There is some rust between each of the tools and they are sticking together. I think this thing was hardly ever used. I am going to start carrying it with me and using it to get it loosened up. Using some fine sand paper in between each tool to clean up the rust. I am curious if I should put a little lubricant, like 3-in-1 oil in between them to help get these things moving again.
What a difference a little 3-in-1 oil makes. Along with cleaning up a little rust in between the tools and working the tools around it is working really nice now. So, what do you guys use for multi-tools? Show us yours. I have used my Gerber for many years now. I like the little drive tool it has that fits into a socket type tool. Then you can use several different bits that are with it in the socket. Has come in hand many times when I needed a screw driver and did not have one.
I've been carrying this: http://www.leatherman.com/80.html since about 1998. Only times I don't have it on my belt are when going into the court house, picking up the kids at school, or flying.
I always keep a Leatherman Wave in my vehicle and in the past I always carried a Leatherman Micra in my pocket. Now I have these, a Style CS and a Style PS, & a AAA LED on my key chain and an assisted opening Kershaw in my other pocket.
I've never been a fan of the multi-tools. I don't have anything against them but I just like using the real thing and usually don't find myself in a situation of needing tools when I can't just walk out to the shop and get some. I have the original Leatherman I got back in the 90's and it is well made....I take it camping but that's about it.
I hear you on this Lukem. Most times I am just around the house I find I don't need one. But I wear one on my belt whenever I am going somewhere. I can not tell you how many times I have been at camp, out in the woods on the tractor, at someone else's camp or house, and the Gerber has come in very handy. Most times I am going for the knife, but many times I have used the little screwdriver bits that come with the Gerber and were handy as can be at the time. I always carry a knife with me if I am in the woods though. I kind of like having the Gerber on my side belt and not having a knife in my pocket. A little more comfortable. In the woods I usually have a larger knife in a sheath on my side.
All my stuff is 100% reliable and never needs fixing. I guess that's why I don't see the need to carry one.
Ive got this one also. I carry it all the time. I had an old style Gerber and snapped the knife, sent it back and they replaced it with the new style one. Gerber gets big props from me for that. Sorry no pics.
I used to think that way too, every tool had a purpose and if I was into something I would just get the one I needed. However, there's this guy that follows us around sometimes, his name is Murphy, and his little curse (Murphy's law) has convinced me that stupid little things happen for a reason. I have a multi with me anytime I'm away from home.
You would think a guy like me would laugh at multi-tools no? Well.... Think again. I have owned 3 but 1 really stood out. I had a Gerber similar to Gasifier's when I was a teen. Loved the slide-out pliers with the bullnose. Very durable but it did have a tendency to pinch your hand if it closed unexpectedly. This is my favorite of the three, my Leatherman Charge Titanium. It has the multiple little bits that do in fact come in quite handy more often than you think and the whole tool fits my hand quite well and used to ride everywhere with me, unless prohibited by law..... Unfortunately it's semi-retired at the moment due to the case needing some repair work and the knifes are a bit less than sharp. I really would like to replace this one with another like it. My current tool is a Snap-on, the one you see in a set from Sams Club. It is by no means a bad tool but you would expect more just because of the name. It certainly does well for the price however, I could buy a few of these before it cost what my Leatherman did. A good friend bought it for me for Christmas and I have to admit, it is growing on me a bit the more I carry it. But the best part about the Snap-On set has got to be this little knife. It is perfect as a pocket knife and I hate to be without it!
