When the heating season comes to a close ...........

Out of curiosity, I have to ask, when the heating season comes to a close, how much firewood do you keep inside the house as in near the wood stove? Or do you move it back outside to add back to the regular stacks?

I do tend to keep a third of a cord near the wood stove in two 4 foot racks, one on either side of the stove. I'll use one rack, then reload that side but shift to using the other side during the heating season. Kind of a fill shift and repeat sort of thing. Usually when the season is over, I just leave the third of a cord sit until next season. This is in my living room so it's all along one wall with the stove in the middle. Whatever I have staged on the porch that's left from the heating season I just tighten up and leave rather than returning it to the regular wood stacks. I may bring more wood into the staging area to finish off that stack. It's in 2 racks, 12 and 16 feet long by 4 feet in height. 16 inches deep. That is unless I have a project going where I might need the space.

 

I leave a rack in house because if it's 50 and raining the stove gets lit! last year was in July..

I bring about a half cord at a time into the garage. From there it comes into the house daily as needed. Right now with temps on the upswing, the garage is almost empty. From now on it will come right from the shed into the house. There won't be anything leftover to take back out.

 

I have a tote that's 18" x 24" x 18" heaping, plus a milk crate full. It sits there and doesn't bother anyone.

 

My wood goes from the porch straight to the stove. I don't store it in the house. Used to years ago, too many spiders and bugs.

 

Hey this is Vermont.. president Coolidge said it was 10 months of winter followed by 2 months of cold weather. I have skied Killington in June it was 50 and in a Tee shirt that said so....

 

Wouldn't it be fairly easy to dial back how much gets brought into the house as the season wanes?
You'd gradually have very little or none left in the house.
My methods have changed almost yearly since starting to burn wood 10 winters ago, but I don't bring much in the house anymore.
I grabbed a few splits yesterday to bring in, and found a little black spider hanging from my hand. Didn't know they were that active in 20 deg. temps.

 

i keep no wood in the house or garage until october or so. when cold is on the horizon i bring about a cord in and stack it in the garage. as i burn it i replace it with wood from outside. i haven't had any trouble with bugs, but there is always the dirt and sawdust issue. just sayin......

 

hey I have no problem in wet and 50 lighting a stove and opening a window.. it's all about making the beautiful wife put on a night gown

 

Last year I lit my last fire June 3rd at 8:19pm. I try to take pictures of the first fire and the last. Usually the last is about a half dozen pictures over the course of a month. And usually in May. It's kind of a record so that all I need to do is bring up the month I think I may have ended the season and go from there. Sometimes forward and sometimes back. This way I also have the time.

 

I've lit the stove to take the dampness out. Works for me. Wood not an issue now because all I use is pellets, but before this, we had wood for years. I never wanted more than an armful inside during warm months because of the mess and potential for bugs.

 

Oooo demanding little cuss today huh? But okay, here is the stove with the wood on either side. Sorry but I'm not so good with a camera indoors so I apologize for it not being too clear. Note the NINETY degree elbow and placement of the thermometer.

 

Any spiders and other bugs become BTU's in the stove. Even if it might only be a .0000000001 BTU.

 

Oh how I wish, but winters here are very unpredictable. They may go on and on or they just stop. Either way I'm prepared for those cold damp days or that first cold night before the heating season.

 

Yeah, fires in June aren't unheard of here.
Every situation is different, so ya' do wut ya' gotta' do, eh?

It seems I lost the initial entry when I decided to add the information on the racks. So I'll add it again.

Before anyone says anything about the stove being warped or the door dropping, it was only the brass trim that dropped making it appear that way. But it has been tapped back into place.
