    Semi-packed snow piles will do the same thing when the air is cold but the sun hits it - just saw it yesterday. Best guess is that the sun magnifies thru ice crystals, warming up the layer below, causing evaporation. The warmed air/vapor pushes up and escapes thru weak spots in the upper layer. But then again, I'm no scientist so am probably completely wrong.

    Is there fungus amungus ?? Is it poofy when you stomp it ?? Probably not, so I'm going with Basod...soft soggy ooey gooey stuff underneath the asphalt being pushed up by pressure being exerted downward from traffic near the edge of the drive. Solidifying in the cold after being skooshed up....

    No it is just sandy soil from below the sod? It did freeze because it had a lot of moisture in it.
    Now that it is warmer, I can squish it when it got warmer outside.
