Got 1 tree cut & the rounds stacked today. All I wanted for a days work Tough to cut wood in the woods with no trails & drifted snow. If it was easy everyone would dot it. Be some good times working with your dad. Enjoy them
Does the tree stay up in the snow where you can just cut through it and not worry about burying your bar in the dirt?
I'm in the same boat. I can get wood i have 6 cord css, but i just css in November. Ive already burned 2.6 cord out of the 4 cord I had seasoned. Started burning Oct 16th. Been a cold, cold, cold past 2.5 months! I hope my wood lasts till march. Then Ill run gas. I learned my lesson!
Winter came back this year to the Mid west. May become a trend. Dennis(BWS) preaches 3+ years supply of wood if you have room. Covers you if the winter is cold & you use more wood, or you have more & better seasoned wood for next year if you don't burn it all. I learned it's better to have extra, life events can happen, one less worry if they do.
Been too soft to cut firewood around here too. I've never met a land owner who wants ruts on their property! I was able to get out and burn some 2 cycle yesterday, just piddling., cleaned up a blowdown walnut. Didn't dare drive down into the bottoms.. My wood shed is getting skinny on the "well seasoned" wood too, but I'll be alright. Here is hoping you guys running short will run into some fast, easy firewood!! Peace.
Your area has had several freeze thaw cycles so far this winter. Tough to get around anywhere but on roads & dirt road become a mess with the freeze/thaw too. Freeze Up & Break Up , pretty much stay inside & wait it out & fight cabin fever. Good luck. Forecast to rain here Friday,
Greendohn, looks like next week will be good for you. Another string of some super cold coming our way and supposed to last up to groundhog day at least. And welcome to the forum.
My wife works in the office for a logging company, and was commenting tonight about giving some of the guys filing jobs (paper filing, not chains!) because the warm-up has them out of the woods. I put the chains on our tractor last weekend, and hope to start cutting this weekend. Now you've got me thinking maybe I should drive the woods roads tomorrow night to pack the snow so they have a change to freeze. We are on fairly well-drained soil, so I hope it is OK out there. Next batch of more serious cold starts here on Sunday.
That was out first step in building an ice road, compact the snow, lets the frost go into the ground. Firms up the base.
It'll be time to order or pick chicks up pretty soon. Wv'e got seven layers producing a half dozen eggs per day. The chicken manure will help with the garden set up. Sounds like you've got the woods and acreage now, everything will work out.
