March is about upon us and I'm wondering if anyone is seeing spring birds yet? My son in PA said they saw their first robin of the year over the weekend. I also remember someone reporting hearing the spring peepers. Here, we're not quite to spring. In fact, today I was cutting wood and around 3:30 it suddenly started turning cold. I did not have a coat on and was fine but all of a sudden my face started getting cold. Of course it is windy today so that makes it seem colder. It also started to snow before I quit but didn't amount to much. They say tomorrow we might get up to 5" of the white stuff then colder for the rest of the week. But, it won't be long now!
My mom said they saw a flock of robins a week or so ago. They live 10 min away. Spring is coming I just wonder how long winter will hold on. This is the second week in a row we're going to get snow in the middle of the week and then have it melt on the weekend. At least the frost isn't very deep this year. Things seam to be draining decent around here.
I saw the semi annual sand hill crane migration the past 2 weekends. Spring is here for the most part.
Nothing here yet. The robins remain year round here as long as there is food, like crab apples on the trees. Our early arrivals are warblers and bluebirds. I think a few more weeks out.
The crows (yeah, I know, not glamorous) have been back for almost a month now. Noisy and squawking all over the place, too. I think I'm really going to look for the nest near the cottage this year...... No robins yet.
Robins have been around for a few weeks and the last 2 weeks we have had 2 cardinals and 2 blue jays.
No robins seen yet, the other day a big flock of grackles landed in the yard on their way to go wherever they were headed. Also, the Juncos have left to head north. They winter here.
I never trusted the robins as I've seen way to many hunkered down in late season blizzards. For me, hearing the songs of the red winged black birds signals true spring.
No robins here yet either. The geese still have not made their way back. Just a very few ponds with open water. The Mississippi just lost ice last weekend but there are still spots that still have ice, not thick but still ice. Suppose to be in the 50's this weekend, probably see the geese. They come before the robins around here.
Been seeing Robins for a few weeks. Cranes flew over a week or so ago. Crows and starlings coming in black clouds.
Forgot that a niece told us she saw a sandhill crane last weekend. We also saw a chipmunk. Was cutting wood yesterday and found no frost in the woods but some out in the open areas. They tell me that crows do not move more than about 100 miles. That was a shocker to me but I guess it is so. LP, you should have cardinals and blue jays all winter long! We usually have an abundance but the cardinals have taken a big hit the last couple of years from the hawks. Juncos are still plentiful here. Especially today with the heavy snow. I didn't realize we had as many as we do.
Schlot, I'll let you know when the geese arrive. The old timers say that's really when you have broken winter in Minnesota. Tonight, "the Norwegian" told me she saw some of her Jonquils busting thru the mulch on the southeast corner of the house. Bless her, she is so diligent with those bulbs in the fall and it always pays off in the spring.
I was always told that crows migrate, ravens don't. Well, whatever they do or where ever they go or don't go, the crows here are loud now once again (but haven't been all winter )
