I've read several articles about burls being so valuable to wood workers that people are poaching them from city parks! I guess they're like having mini gold mines on your property. May be worth harvesting, check eBay and wood working sute for prices.
Lefse yes! Nasty lye soaked excuse for fish.... No thanks. I guess it's an "acquired" taste that I never acquired. Now on the subject of tasty treats, ever try sandbakkels? A little almond flavoring.......mmmmmmmmmmm!!!
Nothing wrong with them. I like most of the norwegian cookies that are usually made around Christmas.
STOP it JUST STOP it RIGHT NOW!!!!! you are making it very tough for a fat man to lose weight... oh never mind I'll just have to settle for home made chocolate chip coolies.....
We are just talking about seasonal cookies so you won't have to worry about eating any of them until next Nov. or Dec. Helps to keep the weight down.
My cousin also turns those burls turns those burls into bowls on his lathe. To him finding them is his holy grail due to the grain. He has me always on the lookout.
I have a burl in the woods. It's in s healthy tree so I can't see getting to it. Just isn't worth it to me.
Yea... I feel the same way, not going to kill the tree over it. But it will be coming out if that tree ever looks sickly. Looks like you have a really big burl high up in that maple?
Mine is in a healthy tree also. It will come down when the tree is ready to be harvested. It's actually quite a cool feature. Guests in my woods always inquire about it.
I'm on burl patrol! My dad just ran off two guys that were trespassing three days before that pic was taken. I was not happy, on alert and carrying extra ammo. That might explain my photogenic happy face.
Not my picture but this will give you an idea of the size of this burl. there is another one situated just outside of town as well. almost the same size.
Dang Trompers! I have started a rumor that I was nearly bitten by a Timber Rattler in my woods. Play it up...cuss the ODNR for releasing them back into the wild, etc. Nothing wrong with a little disinformation to help discourage trespassing. Word spreads fast.
Well, now I can say that I've seen everything. Are you sure it's not just a big rock? I'm just saying......... it looks like a rock.
I don't do any turning yet, but I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express and watched a few woodworking shows. I think especially for bowls, you want to rough them out while the wood is still green, and then season the blanks. Its done this way in part because the wood will want to move after the dish is scooped out.
