Yes, I know. We cut a lot of poplar because it was shading my garden in the little valley. So, I figure it could be put to use heating the house.

The poplar also burns to a nice white fluffy ash; so it appears to burn up to nothing which is nice.

Until..... you've burned enough wood to have to clean that "fluffy" ash out....it takes to the air nicely. Guess where it settles?

I already did and it went everywhere and made a mess. I had to wipe the stove down and the pipe. I have not used the ash pan so I am wondering if that would be better than using my shovel.

Yes, ash is good to put around squash plants to keep away squash beetles.

When I had a garden, all the ashes went into it.

Seriously, I have had some problems in the last few years with squash beetles. Since I did not burn wood, I did not have ashes to put around the plants like Mum and Dad did. This year I will have some and see if it works. I like to use as little pesticides in my gardening as possible. If I find horn worms on my tomatoes (watch out, their spines can really hurt) I use pliers to take care of them unless I see the parasitic wasp eggs in which I then just locate the worm to another area.

I believe I shall need to implement a set of calipers or perhaps a micrometer to gauge these so called 30 pages for acceptable thickness......

You need to first remove the chaff.

Of course. No self respecting FHC member would proceed otherwise.
