Keep piggin out!! I gotta be honest. The fact that the HD a mile from house is still $259 pizzes me off to no end.
I have to say it's really weird how MA is the only NE state still at that price, it's like they forgot to lower it Take a spin over to any store in CT or RI, they have been at the $199 price for some time now.
And NH HD's are still at the $259/ton price ($5.18/bag). Lowes is the only one that has gone down in price to my knowledge and that may be a short term thing.
I don't know how much energy that goes into pellet production comes from wood waste vs nat gas vs oil vs electricity, but in the NorthEast, many commercial/industrial users are at the end of the whip when it comes to energy prices. There was an article a couple of years ago about a paper mill that had to idle based on energy prices. With the move to nat gas for electricity production and the restricted supply in the northeast extreme spikes in costs to commercial operators are not uncommon. This is of course just one variable in the equation as to why someone would choose to or not to produce wood pellets in the Northeast.. Here's the article. Yeah I noticed on Lowes website they are now indicating the $3.98 price is good thru 2/29. Question is what happens after that, does the price go up or down?
and their Greene Team at $349/ton...!!! Lowes will be sitting in those GT pellets for some good time....
I think that is a very good guess. From what I hear a lot of them are just about out of inventory while a few unlucky ones still have some work to do!
the rest of the home depot's will follow suit. They didnt all change their price at the same time. I noticed from board posts it started getting lowered south of me. gradually i would see posts from people about their hd lowering too. still waited for mine lower. then saw lower prices in CT. 2 weeks after I saw my local lowes drop the price, my local HD followed. I guess it must be killing them to sell for 199. Are they losing money on product at that price? could it be they paid 189 a ton and started off asking 269? If thats the case they deserve what they get. If they paid say 230 a ton and are now forced to sell at 199 then that bites the big one for them. Anyone work for a BBS and know what they paid for pellets?
no one is making any money at $199. i do not believe the BBS were gouging anyone, just pricing for a decent margin in a market that sold out for two years in a row. now they are just liquidating inventory
I picked up 3 damaged bags of GT's for a $1 a bag and the last one is in the hopper now. These are nice pellets, not much dust and virtually no fines. They burn nice and are pretty hot. However, these are the ashiest pellets I've burned in quite a while. That includes FSU, MWP, Timber Heat and others. Why anyone would pay the money Lowes and GT ask for these things is beyond me.
Those started out as the best that Lowes offered years ago. For many years all the pellets were priced the same until Lowes started charging more for GT. Its started with a little bit more but this year someone with their head up their azz apparently thought that they were as good as Douglas Fir because they priced them about the same per ton.
I'm not so sure, They do buy in really large volumes which equals large(huge even) discounts. So I assume they pay far less than the pellet house. Could you imagine your savings if you could pull them in by the 10K ton(or more) lots??
